Position Title: Library Director
Job Summary: As the chief executive officer of the library, the Director plans, organizes, directs, evaluates, and reviews the library’s resources, personnel, facilities, services and programs to respond to the needs of the community. The Director operates under the executive direction of the Library Board of Trustees. Work includes developing and monitoring budget resources, planning and implementing overall library goals and objectives, oversight of staff and services.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience: High school diploma and current public library certification (or completion of public library management 1 and 2 courses within one year). Library Director is required to obtain and maintain public library certification through on-going education through State Library of Iowa. Previous work in a library is preferred. While a Masters in Library Science is not required, it is a plus. Knowledge of Booksystems Atriuum library automation a plus. Skillful with a variety of computer software applications, website design, and social media communication. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Approachable, friendly, innovative, responsible, and takes the initiative are also pluses.
Physical: Job requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stooping, kneeling and lifting of up to 30 lbs. Must hold current valid driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Administrative Services:
- Works cooperatively with the Library Board of Trustees; prepares and distributes various reports prior to each board meeting (director’s report, financial report, library activity reports, etc) attends library board meetings
- Makes recommendations to the Board on library policies and implements said policies
- Prepares annual statistical reports for Board, City , County, and State
- Keeps all records of financial data (checking accounts, petty cash, savings accounts)
- Keeps Board informed of library-related news, events, and opportunities
Staff Management:
- Recruit, select, hire, supervise, and evaluate library staff
- Supervises temporary staff and volunteers
- Oversee the work of custodial staff.
Collection Management:
- Reads publications and catalogs to keep abreast of new materials
- Selects and orders books for all collection areas of the library including: Adult, Audio, Childrens, Juveniles, Non-Fiction and more.
- Catalogs and processes library materials and keeps the catalog up to date
- Maintains the appearance of the collection and ensures systematic weeding of materials
- Processes Interlibrary Loan requests
- Registers patrons and handles deleting of old patron records as necessary
- Keeps circulation records
- Handles overdue notices
- Repairs library materials when appropriate
- Interacts with public and serves at circulation desk when able
Facilities Management:
- Oversee care and maintenance of the library building and grounds
- Maintains a neat and attractive library, which may include posters, art work, displays, furnishings, etc
Technology Management:
- Assists patrons with computers and other technology as able
- Updates library website
- Oversees computer maintenance
Library Services Management:
- Develops and implements library programs for all ages
- Follow library’s 5 year plan and implements goals according to timeline in plan
- Handles reference requests
- Prepare news releases and submissions to the media to announce new or special services and events that spotlight the library
- Supervises library public relations
- Assist and guide local volunteer groups (e.g., Library Friends) who wish to help with library promotion, fundraising, and enhancement of services
- Conduct ongoing evaluations of existing library programs, services, policies, and procedures, and submit recommendations for improvements to the library board
- Attends continuing education classes
HOURS AND SALARY
This is a full-time equivalent position averaging 32 hours per week. This position has IPERS (Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System) and benefits including Medical Insurance, paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, and bereavement/emergency leave. Salary range will be $27,000-$32,000 dependent on qualifications and experience.
