Job Description

Madison Public Library (MPL) seeks a dynamic individual to perform highly responsible managerial, administrative, and professional work assisting in the administration and operations of the Madison Public Library system.  We encourage creativity, innovation, imagination, and going beyond the traditional or expected.  Some may say "Why"; at MPL we say "Why Not".  Our outstanding and collegial workforce is highly valued by the community, and includes staff members who have received national recognition or awards for their work at MPL.

Under the general supervision of the Library Director, work includes managing and controlling the daily supervision of the Central and Neighborhood Library operations, personnel functions, and requires conferring with, advising, and informing the Library Director on major policy and procedural areas affecting the system. This position provides direction and leadership for the management team overseeing service delivery both within the buildings and in the community. Work is performed under broad management policy and requires considerable independent judgment and discretion in supervising, directing, and controlling the operational activities in assigned areas of responsibility. As an administrative member of the organization, this position plays a key role in the development and implementation of the Library's mission and vision in conjunction with the Library's strategic objectives. This position will act on behalf of the Library Director and Madison Public Library during absences of the Library Director and as specifically delegated in order to provide for continuity of services.

Madison Public Library, a 2015 National Medal finalist, is a dynamic organization that actively embraces the changing role of libraries.  Our new Central Library opened in 2013 and recognized by Library Journal as a Landmark Library, features a fully equipped media lab, gigabit connectivity, and our critically acclaimed Bubbler program which has created a platform for our community to learn, share and create.  In addition, MPL's Bubbler program in 2015 was one of only 10 companies or organizations statewide to receive a Wisconsin Innovation Award. Our eight neighborhood libraries have similarly embraced new services and technology, such as the new Meadowridge Library's community kitchen that supports youth nutrition and food preparation programs.  In 2016, we will begin developing our concept and design for a recently funded relocation of our Pinney Library, which will feature an innovative early literacy environment.   Opportunities for exploration and innovation will always be a feature of our organization.

Additional Info & Requirements

Four years of professional library experience in managing a public library program and/or service, including at least two years of supervisory experience. Five years of executive level experience in managing large, complex projects with oversight at multiple locations may substitute for the experience requirement.  Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.

The Community

Madison, WI, is constantly listed at the top in several "Best of" areas for our livability and community features.  It is home to the University of Wisconsin-Madison which is among the top ranked public universities in the U.S.  Madisonians and Madison city officials are proud supporters of their public libraries.  We welcome you to join our adventure in providing exceptional library services for this fun and engaging city.
