Job Description

Marmot Library Network is looking for a Systems Administrator with a proactive, team spirited attitude that can bring experience and initiative to this expanding and successful organization. 

TITLE: SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR

 SUPERVISOR: IT Services Manager

 PURPOSE: The Systems Administrator (SA) manages network facilities so that all member libraries can access via the internet services hosted by Marmot. The SA also manages a wide area network of a multitude of circuits for specific libraries using Marmot as their Internet Service Provider (ISP). The SA collaborates with the IT Services department to develop and maintain network architecture and security; deploy, configure, test, maintain, and monitor active network equipment and Linux servers, including DNS, NTP, web, e-mail, backup, helpdesk, and other servers as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Education requirements: BA/BS or higher: Degrees or course work in Computer Science or Computer Information Science desired, networking certification desired.

 

  • Work Experience: 5 or more years in progressively increasing responsibility in Computer Systems Management, Telecommunications, and LAN/WAN management. Experience in Cisco IOS and Redhat/Fedora/CentOS Linux. Practical knowledge of one or more programming languages. Practical knowledge in programming and configuring Linux operating systems (script languages).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Administer Linux servers.

Deploy, configure, maintain and monitor Linux Servers.

Manage server performance, capacity, system maintenance, user accounts, applications, operating system, and hardware.

 Administer internet services.

Monitor daily operations and usage of internet services.

Manage web services.

Manage email services.

Manage DNS services.

Manage internet domain registration services.

Manage IP addressing and documentation.

Manage router configurations and assist hardware troubleshooting and support.

 Manage network security.

            Analyze vulnerabilities and recommend or develop solutions.

            Monitor network security.

            Manage security of user accounts, servers, and Internet services.

            Recommend or develop disaster recovery strategies and procedures.

 Administer Marmot network operations.

Monitor network operations, analyze problems and develop solutions.

Order new data circuits and telecom equipment, as well as changes to circuits, and coordinate installation or reconfiguration.

Assist the Business Manager in monitoring telecommunications contracts and invoices.

Document the Marmot network.

Develop new technologies for network operations.

Serve as a network and systems resource.

 Advise and work with other Marmot staff to install, maintain, and support LANs, wireless access points, and site-based routers, switches, etc.

 Adapt to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

 Keyboard skills to input commands and data into personal computers and servers.

    • Practical knowledge of Linux operating system and systems administration.
    • Practical knowledge of Cisco router operating systems and systems administration.
    • Practical knowledge of Microsoft operating systems.
    • Practical knowledge of Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN).
    • Knowledge of hardware systems.
    • English fluency.
  • Ability to conduct emergency procedures when necessary.

 WORKING CONDITIONS

 

  • Sit for extended periods of time at a computer keyboard.
  • Lift and move objects weighing less than 40 lbs.
  • Communicate fluently.
  • See equipment and read manuals.
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach to install and maintain equipment.
  • Occasionally travel to remote sites.
  • Work outside of normal business hours as needed. Maintenance must often be scheduled when libraries are closed.
