Job Description

Under general supervision, to discharge and shelve library materials and to perform related duties as required.

1. Correctly sorts and shelves in alphabetical or numerical order all library items of the George Reynolds Branch Library & Meadows Branch Library.

2. Checks public areas for materials off the shelves. Collects materials and returns them to the appropriate shelves. Maintains order on shelves.

3. Discharges library materials returned to the library. Identifies and separates materials for delivery to other branches of the Boulder Public Library System or to other libraries outside the Boulder Public Library System. Prepares delivery cards for the return of the materials to other libraries.

4. Checks designated media items for missing parts.

5. Identifies and separates returned materials needing repair.

6. Unpacks, checks in, and sorts materials delivered daily by the intra library courier service. Unpacks, checks in, and sorts Boulder Public Library materials delivered daily by the Central Colorado Library Courier from libraries outside the Boulder Public Library System.

7. Makes and affixes new barcodes as needed for materials.

8. Retrieves paged items for local requests, requests made by the Flatiron Library Consortium and Prospector Libraries, and inter-library loan requests.

9. Shelves holds received.

10. Serves as a backup to desk staff as needed.

11. Helps with opening and closing procedures.

12. Sets up meeting rooms for programs and returns chairs and tables to their proper locations.

13. Other:
• Performs related duties as required by management to meet the needs of the library and city.
• Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
• Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Understanding of and expertise in alphabetical and numerical order functions. Demonstrated speed and accuracy in alphabetizing and putting items in numeric order. Work experience demonstrating dependability, punctuality, and precision. Ability to operate a personal computer by navigating the Internet, using email, word processing, and basic database programs.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications:
Ability to communicate in at least one language other than English, or proficiency in Braille and/or sign language. Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System. Previous shelving experience in a public library setting.

WORKING CONDITIONS - Required Physical and Mental Effort, and Environmental Conditions:
Physical and Mental Effort: Primarily active physical work, which requires constant lifting up to 8 pounds knee to waist, frequent lifting of 5 pounds over head, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds floor to waist. Requires repetitive to constant use of the hands; frequent pushing/pulling of book carts or smart bins equal to 20 to 40 pounds of horizontal force. Must be able to constantly walk or stand for up to 4 – 6 hours per day. Must be able to frequently bend, squat, and kneel. Must be able to constantly reach below shoulder level and frequently reach above shoulder level to overhead. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions.
Work Environment: Works in public areas of the library and in the basement operating and monitoring equipment that produces a moderate level of background noise, and in a setting subject to interruptions.
Machines and equipment used in work include but are not limited to the following: Personal computer, RTI CD/DVD repair machine, office, receipt, barcode printers, and hand-held barcode scanners, telephone, photocopy machine, facsimile machine, and calculator.
