Job Description

Full Position Description

The Web Developer is responsible for the planning, development, coordination, maintenance, and evaluation of the MLD web site, social media, and other online digital applications used by patrons. In addition to monitoring and promoting new features and services related to the MLD web presence, the Web Developer will work with the IT and Digital Services staff, library staff, marketing, and patrons to improve the MLD user interfaces and overall digital offerings.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential

Responsible for analysis, design, development, implementation, maintenance, content coordination, and evaluation of the Meridian Library website, user interfaces, and integrated web applications. This includes management of user-interface customizations and integrations of proprietary library products affecting: discovery/searching of information resources, interlibrary loan, room reservations, library research guides, and other functional areas.

Works to implement and maintain open source and open access technologies and to develop and support the use of digital library content. Finds creative ways to meet user needs by integrating instructional design theory and usability into the Libraries’ web sites, tutorials, and other applications.

Serves as the primary point of contact, project manager, and coordinator for the Meridian Library web and social media presence, and is responsible for resolving issues as well as identifying, developing, and implementing enhancements; provides leadership and expertise to help the Library manage its web-based applications and tools that enhance access to services, collections, and instructional content for patrons; provides leadership in implementing effective communication in a digital environment.

Participates in processes related to web design and development, information architecture, and content creation and maintenance; engages in web site and web applications development and systems management work with Drupal, Umbraco, Word Press, and other systems as appropriate; leads and/or participates in processes that will assess user requirements, needs, and satisfaction levels in order to assure that the Library web site and applications are understandable, usable, and effective for the patrons; maintains personal skillset with web technologies, software, tools, and solutions and participates in evaluation, assessment, and training efforts; serves as a subject matter expert on matters related to website design, content, and usability.

Assists with light administrative duties including scheduling, statistics, reports, and ordering of equipment and supplies as necessary. Performs basic budgeting tasks. May at times assign regular operational tasks to a small staff of employees and/or volunteers.

Is professionally active; identifies and participates in professional development opportunities.  Stays current on technology trends and changes, contributing ideas and implementing changes where appropriate.

Performs other duties as assigned. Acts as a backup and assistance for IT staff when system demands require additional staffing with technical expertise.

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements: The job requires the employee to stand, twist/turn, maintain flexibility, hear, listen, see, and speak clearly; frequently stoop/bend and walk; perform manual dexterity movements; seldom sit, kneel, crawl, and balance.  The job also requires the employee to lift and carry 10-25 lbs; reach at, above, and below shoulder height; grasp objects weighing 10-25 lbs.; push and pull objects weighing 50 lbs.

Mental Requirements: The job requires the employee to read, write, perform clerical duties, comprehend and use perception, perform alphabetical and numerical sorting/filing, and perform basic math.

Technology, Equipment, and Devices: The job requires the employee to regularly operate and exhibit proficiency with computers and commonly used Microsoft applications, library systems and databases, email and cloud environments, and social media.  The job requires the employee to operate and troubleshoot a variety of technology equipment.

Work Environment: The job requires the employee to be subjected to repetition, working alone, working around others, verbal contact with others, face-to-face contact with diverse patrons, presenters and staff, inside environments, mechanical equipment, cabling and hookup of various and moving objects.  

Expected Hours of Work:  The job requires employee to work a varied schedule, including days, evenings, and weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Position schedule is subject to change at any time at the discretion of management.

Expected travel: The job requires limited travel for training and conference activities. May require some travel between library locations.
