Job Description

The East Asian Reference/Instruction Librarian is a tenure stream faculty position reporting to the Faculty Director for Reference and Instructional Services. Duties include general and specialized reference in the social sciences and humanities with possible expanded areas associated with a one-desk concept; classroom teaching as part of an active library instruction program; selecting library materials in the areas of East Asian Languages, primarily Chinese and/or Japanese and other commonly taught Asian languages; and guiding collection management decisions related to the East Asian collection. This position serves as the primary liaison to the East Asian Languages and Civilizations Department and the Center for Asian Studies and assumes primary responsibility for the development and delivery of services for students and faculty in these units. In addition, this position will work closely with a grant-funded Bibliographer for Asian Languages and Studies. The Reference and Instructional Services Department provides general reference and instructional services to the students and faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder and specializes in services and collections for the social sciences and humanities. Significant parts of the responsibilities of this position are research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado at Boulder. REQUIREMENTS • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution. • Language skills in Chinese and/or Japanese. • Ability to work independently and in a cooperative environment. • Written and spoken communication skills. • Interpersonal skills. Appointment and Salary: The successful candidate with demonstrated accomplishments in research and creative work will be appointed as a full-time (12 month) Assistant Professor on tenure track. A successful candidate with promise in research but lacking an established scholarly record will be appointed as a Senior Instructor (non-tenure track) for two years, with promotion to the tenure track and the rank of Assistant Professor upon a successful review. Starting salary range will be $42,000-47,000. Benefits include 22 working days vacation; 10 paid holidays; liberal sick leave; University group health care plan; group life insurance; TIAA/CREF retirement/annuity; and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured librarians are eligible for sabbatical leave.
