Job Description

NATURE OF WORK This is specialized library clerical work assisting in the operation of the library's circulation desk. Position requires working some evenings and weekends, and requires willingness to travel to work at all City library facilities. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Assists customers at the library's circulation desk and checkout stations; checks library materials in and out, and retrieves materials placed on reserve by patrons. Performs routine circulation tasks including check in and check out, issuing library cards, processing overdue materials, balancing the cash register, processing holds, and telephone renewals, and other tasks necessary to insure the efficient operation of circulation of library materials. Answers general questions about library services, programs, and materials. Collects fines for overdue books and other materials. Separates returned books by general type; checks for lost or misplaced books. Collates books prior to shelving; shelves books according to library procedures. Performs clerical duties related to the care and circulation of materials MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED Telephone, computer terminals, photocopiers, bar code readers, book security system equipment, cash registers, self checkout machines, and credit card machines. WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES This is a public library environment with one-on-one contact with library patrons. This work involves standing at circulation desk, climbing step stools to reach six-foot high shelves, and bending on hands and knees to shelve lower level books. This is a public library environment including one-on-one contact with library patrons. This position involves bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, repetitive movements with hands, arms and shoulders, standing, walking and sitting. Must be able to climb stairs and reach high and low shelves to retrieve books and other materials and equipment. Must be able to scan library books, retrieve them from the floor, shelves, and countertops on a regular basis. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and transport boxes of books, materials, audiovisual equipment, and other equipment to various locations. Must have the ability to push a cart of up to 150 pounds.

Work may involve performance of various routine procedures that assists in general housekeeping duties of the library. Work follows established practices and procedures and is subject to supervision. Assists librarians with special projects. Performs related work as required.Successful candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment physical and a substance screen prior to employment. Background investigations to include a credit check, may be done prior to employment.
