Job Description

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Head of Children/Teen Services, the Children’s Library Assistant performs duties relevant to daily operations of the Children’s Library. The Children’s Library Assistant will be responsible for checking materials in/out, answering phones, directing patrons to sources of information, issuing new library cards, maintaining confidential patron records, shelving returned items, collecting fines and fees, maintaining the organization and appearance of library collections, processing new acquisitions, implementing programs for the children and teens (occasionally off-site), and other duties as assigned. Additional primary duties may include copy cataloging, overdue notifications, collection development/ordering for the children and teen sections of the library and/or administrative assistance. The Children’s Library Assistant may also work at the Information or Circulations Desk as needed.

Essential Duties

Checks in & out library materials using a computerized database.

Assists patrons, primarily children, teens, and families, with informational and direction questions, manages patron computer sessions, issues library cards, processes holds and overdue notifications.

Notices and approaches patrons who may need assistance.

Assists in managing the Children’s Library’s collections, including collection development, ordering, processing new materials, repair, maintenance, and weeding of materials.

Shelves library materials in proper sequence alphabetically and numerically.

Answers the telephone and appropriately routes calls, prioritizes calls, and provides high-quality customer service at all times.

Assists patrons with placing interlibrary loan and purchase requests.

Assists patrons with library meeting room reservations.

Operates the cash register and counts change correctly.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

General office practices, basic math, and computers.

Current literary trends in children’s literature.

The special needs of children; familiarity with children’s literature; basic knowledge of child development.

Skills in:

Word processing/typing, desktop publishing, e-mail, internet, and spreadsheets.

Using office equipment, including but not limited to: computers, printers, copiers, etc.

Reading aloud to groups of children.

Ability to:

Alphabetize and shelve materials in alpha/numerical sequence.

Plan and implement children’s and teen programming, such as story time, special programs and homework help.

Use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Follow written and verbal instructions and establish and maintain effective/cooperative working relationships with staff and patrons.

Accept feedback or evaluation on work performance.

Deal effectively with the public on the phone and in person.

Perform duties in a sensitive, discreet and confidential manner at all times to protect the privacy of patron records and files.

Balance team and individual responsibilities; exhibit objectivity and openness to others views; give and welcome feedback; contribute to building a positive team spirit.

Demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness; look for ways to improve and promote quality; apply feedback to improve performance; monitor own work to ensure quality.

Follow and enforce the policies passed by the Grand County Library Board and procedures implemented by the Director.

Work when scheduled; begin and end work as expected; call in according to policy when arriving late for work or when absent; observe policies on break and lunch periods; use work time appropriately.

Work independently without constant supervision.

Organize, retrieve, shelve, and shift materials on shelves ranging from 3” above the floor to 72” high quickly and accurately.

Provide basic computer troubleshooting assistance.

Special Requirements:

A twelve-month probationary period is a prerequisite to this position.

Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening and background check is required.

Work is performed during day, evening, and/or Saturday shifts at the Grand County Public Library.
