Job Description

Develop, plan and present creative, educational and entertaining programs and special events for diverse youth of all ages that encourages lifetime literacy and the development of 21st century skills.  Program population includes babies, toddlers, preschoolers, elementary aged children, teens and families. This position reports to the Children's Services Librarian III. 

The salary range for this position is $18.18 - $26.39 annually with an expected hiring range of $18.18- $22.28 depending on qualifications and experience.
 

 

 Our Position:ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • Work with supervisors to create and implement Spanish services and programs
  • Serve as a library liaison to Spanish speaking customers and community groups.
  • Provide reference and reader advisory services in both English and Spanish
  • Assist patrons in the use of library facilities, resources, and collections
  • Responsible for the collection management and acquisition of Spanish language multi-format materials for teens and children
  • Develop and coordinate outreach efforts throughout the community
  • Provide direct public service from the Children's Desk
  • Story times for babies/toddlers and caregivers
  • Flexible schedule including some nights and weekends

 

 Our Candidate:Knowledge, skills and abilities:
Ability to speak, read, write, interpret and translate both English & Spanish fluently required.  Excellent English & Spanish verbal & written communication skills.  Ability to perform job duties effectively during relaxed or stressed activity times within the department and community.  Strong customer service skills.  Ability to learn new tasks quickly.  Ability to build strong relationships with co-workers and customers of all ages.  Ability to positively inspire and energize customers about library services and materials.  Ability to and experience in providing story times, programs and public presentations to groups of varying ages.  Knowledge of child development stages or direct experience working with children in an educational or library setting.  Knowledge of various reading levels and/or materials for youth.  Working knowledge of the library's computer system and Internet.  Strong ability to use computer software to prepare materials for marketing and promotion.  Ability to work independently, multi-task, meet deadlines and constructively problem solve.
Education and/or experience:
Bachelor's degree required; MLS preferred.  Two (2) years library or directly related professional experience required.  MLS may substitute for experience.  An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year for year basis.  Previous experience working with youth required, preferably including a diverse range of ages. 
 

Licensure and/or certifications:
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must pass multi-level assessment (speak, read, write, interpret & translate) in order to obtain Spanish fluency certification (required for position) within 30 days of hire.

Working Environment and Required Background Checks:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work in a typical public library environment with extensive public contact; must be able to access and visually scan the library computer/staff screens, explain the displayed information and direct customers to shelf location; must be able to position or move materials on varying height shelves for extended periods of time; must be able to move library carts weighing in excess of 50 pounds across a carpeted floor; must be able to manipulate visual materials during story times.
 
Operating knowledge of library on-line computer catalog and staff terminals; Internet; PC's; printers; technology such as MP3 players and ebook readers; sound systems, laminators; photocopier; paper cutter;; DVD players; CD players; telephone; library carts; library materials (books, DVDs, CD's, etc.); and arts and crafts materials.  Flexible schedule requires some evening and weekend (Saturday and Sunday) hours.
