Job Description

Madison Public Library is seeking a community-minded Librarian for the Goodman South Madison Library to embrace our mission to celebrate ideas, promote creativity, connect people and enrich lives. We strive to recruit a diverse workforce to best serve Madison's diverse population, and we encourage all qualified candidates to apply.

Madison Public Library seeks a Community Engagement Librarian at the Goodman South Madison Library who will be part of a team developing a platform and service models focused on lifelong learning, cultivating relationships between the Library and Madison's learning community in order to foster opportunities to learn, share and create.  This position will facilitate connections between learners and instructors from a variety of environments and organizations to build inclusive communities focused on participatory learning.    This position will ensure equitable provision of learning resources and opportunities, and will lead librarians and other staff in developing culturally competent models for learning services.

In this position, you'll grow and develop significant external relationships, to include neighborhood groups and outreach to the underserved or unserved. Ideally, you'll be skilled at quickly assessing their environment and identifying the strengths of their library and the opportunities to improve service so that they can plan and deliver library programs and services to a broad range of community members, both within and outside the library.   Successful applicants should expect to provide leadership and coordination in neighborhood library operations, including work activities of staff, facilities and technology needs, assisting in the hiring of staff and recruiting and coordinating adult volunteers. The Neighborhood Librarian at the Goodman South Madison Library will develop local and multiple-library programs, and have an active role at an all ages Ask Desk.

The Community

Working for Madison Public Library means working alongside a highly talented and truly outstanding group of people. Some of us support one of the country's highest rates of circulation per capita, while others are deeply engaged with the community. We don't just excel in traditional library services: The Bubbler has taken the makerspace concept quite a bit further than most, our youth services crew are reviewing apps on our local NBC affiliate and working with nurses to incorporate literacy into in-home prenatal care visits, and librarians lead four of the City of Madison's Neighborhood Resource Teams. Our spaces also shine, as with a new community kitchen supporting youth nutrition and food preparation programs in our Meadowridge Library, and the fully equipped Media Lab in our new Central Library. Madison Public Library is bigger than our buildings, and the focus of our work is on community empowerment, both within and outside the library's facilities. We are a recipient of the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, and our Central Library was recognized by Library Journal as a Landmark Library.
