Job Description

1. At public desk, interacts with the public to assist library patrons with locating materials and information. Provides support in circulation and readers advisory activities, in the use of the Internet, in accessing the library catalog and reference materials, and other situational demands. 2. Maintains an understanding of the needs of youth from several perspectives including cognitive development, emotional and social development, and educational development. 3. Knowledge of and efficient use of a variety of reference materials to provide excellent customer service to teachers, caregivers and youth. These materials include books, multi-media materials, the Internet, online databases, reference bibliographies, and periodicals while maintaining a general knowledge of resources available in the Children’s and Teens’ collections as well as the larger library collection. 4. Assists in the planning and administration of a variety of programs and special events for youth, families, and caregivers including contacting, interviewing, and coordinating necessary volunteers, performers and employees. Designs and produces necessary program materials, purchases and organizes supplies, schedules rooms, and leads programs. Assists other Library staff with graphic and promotion of activities. 5. Assists with collection maintenance such as weeding, mending books, deleting books, making purchasing suggestions along with day-to-day upkeep. 6. Compiles for patrons reading lists of recommended materials on issues relating to children and types of books that are frequently requested. 7. Creates displays of topical interest, including specialized collections of books and materials to encourage reading and provide information in those areas. 8. Under the direction of the Library’s Outreach Coordinator, participates in Outreach programs for children. 9. Processes materials, information, accounts or records using established Library procedures. 10. Operates a computer using appropriate software for duties assigned. 11. Interacts with the public and Library staff to exchange routine information and acts as a resource for other staff in their interactions with youth. 12. Communicates professionally in person, on the telephone, facsimile machine, and computer to conduct Library business as necessary. 13. Provides clerical and research assistance to the Library Youth Services Assistant. 14. Other: • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the City. • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to City property. • Responsible for knowing and complying with all City and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies. We are looking for someone to work in both children's and teen services. Spanish language and experience with technology including web design, podcasting and videocasting is desired. The Main Branch of the Boulder Public Library is an extremely busy work environment and the department is team oriented. Ability to work with and understand all ages of children and teens. Experience working with children and teens in a group setting including programming experience. Knowledge of children’s and teen literature. Experience and ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from a variety of backgrounds, ages and abilities. Interest, desire, and ability to communicate courteously and effectively with and provide services to others, including the public, both in person, on the telephone, or via E-mail. Willingness to take direction and learn a variety of tasks. Good organizational skills. Well-developed keyboard skills. Familiarity with personal computers and appropriate software. Experience with data entry or electronic systems. Ability to work under minimal supervision. Willingness and flexibility to work a schedule that includes evenings and weekends.

Ability to work with and understand all ages of children and teens. Experience working with children and teens in a group setting including programming experience. Knowledge of children’s and teen literature. Experience and ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from a variety of backgrounds, ages and abilities. Interest, desire, and ability to communicate courteously and effectively with and provide services to others, including the public, both in person, on the telephone, or via E-mail. Willingness to take direction and learn a variety of tasks. Good organizational skills. Well-developed keyboard skills. Familiarity with personal computers and appropriate software. Requires acceptable background information including criminal conviction record and credit history. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: College degree and/or equivalent experience in a library or teaching capacity. Experience working in a team environment and experience and ability to work effectively independently. Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects over extended periods of time. Ability to communicate in at least one language other than English, or proficiency in Braille and/or sign language, specifically Spanish. Experience desired in web management, web maintenance and newer podcasting and videocasting technologies.
