Job Description

The Fort Lupton Public and High School Library is seeking a Children and Family Services Librarian.

Our Library is uniquely situated, in that it is both a public and school library.  Our library is also a member (not branch) library of the High Plains Library District.  We are proud of our small, tight-knit community.  It is diverse ethnically, politically and economically and across generations.

SUMMARY:  Plans, implements and evaluates library programs and services which fulfill the diverse educational, recreational and personal needs of local children.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The following duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Conducts regular community needs assessments to identify children’s needs, in order to create and deliver tailored services and programs to address identified needs.
  • Provides prompt, courteous and direct assistance to patrons with basic information regarding use of library materials, equipment, and services.
  • Ensures the library's collections include relevant print, audio visual and digital resources aimed at the specific interests and needs of children and families in the community.
  • Participates in library special projects as required or as necessary.
  • Develops and conducts programs for children and caregivers which encourage reading, viewing, and listening skills and the use of the library facilities and materials.
  • Engages in outreach to schools, daycares and preschools, and other community organizations and agencies that serve children and their caregivers.
  • Instructs children and caregivers in information gathering, research skills and digital literacy skills.
  • Leverages community experts, coaches and mentors for services and programs in order to meet the needs and interests of children and families.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with schools, community groups, agencies and non-profits that target youth in order to plan and deliver programs and services that meet local children and families’ needs and interests.
  • Coordinates daily activities of staff and volunteers assigned to children or family services.
  • Takes a leadership role in developing, implementing and evaluating the overall children and family services program.
  • Attends and participates in professional library conferences, seminars, and network committees; reads professional literature; attends and participates in staff meeting discussions.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to use personal computer and appropriate software, library “Integrated Library System”, audio visual equipment, fax, copier, multi-line telephone system.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to speak in front of large groups of both children and adults for both training and entertainment.
  • Effective interpersonal relations with children, their caregivers, and other professionals who work with children.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and appreciation of literature for children.
  • Knowledge of reference sources and the practices, and techniques of collection development and programming for the public and the ability to apply that knowledge to perform the essential job duties and responsibility of the position.
  • Requires good professional judgment and strong interpersonal skills in dealing with the public and the ability to interact successfully with all age groups; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and the ability to deal effectively with customers who may be difficult, angry, or disagreeable.
  • Requires the ability to read, interpret, understand, and follow city and department policies and procedures in the daily conduct of the job, including, but not limited to: the city’s personnel policies and procedures; department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to understand verbal information and instruction. Ability to exchange information with others and to develop and present recommendations.
  • Read and understand written information. Ability to compose information and instruction in written form. Ability to translate verbal communication into effective written material; e.g., reports and other documents.
  • Knowledge of developmental, recreational and educational needs of children.
  • Knowledge of current trends in library services for children.
  • Knowledge of standard library procedures, current information technology, Internet and database search capabilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations, volunteer groups and to serve the public courteously.
  • Must be able to drive a car and hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends. 

Education, certifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in education or liberal arts.
  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program preferred. 
  • Library experience required.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, but not required.
  • Experience in working for and with children (ages 0 - 11) and their families.

Working Conditions:

Work is general performed in an office environment where exposure to temperature extremes, contaminants, and noise are not normally encountered. Hazards are minor and controllable.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, use hands, fingers, handle, feet, or operate objects, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. Employee must communicate clearly and effectively; must understand and be understood. The employee must occasionally carry, pull, push, or lift up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision acuity and the ability to adjust his or her focus, allowing a broad field of vision. It is essential that the employee be physically able to operate a variety of computer and office equipment successfully in order to fulfill the essential functions of this position.
