Job Description

Job Duties: Assists library users at the reference desk and through chat and email through reference negotiation to determine information patrons need; identifies appropriate sources for the information using library online catalog, databases, other non-proprietary resources, and a knowledge of the collection; and then instructing the user in how to use the resource or software. Performs direct patron service at least 20 hours per week. Works with liaison librarians to create and maintain LibGuides for assigned disciplines, topics, and courses. Develops working knowledge of LibGuides best practices and regularly reviews other LibGuides for improvement. Maintains currency and accuracy in library's LibGuides. Assists Electronic Resources and Instruction/Reference Librarian in a creating digital learning objects. Assists electronic resources librarian in database management, including gathering statistics from databases usage. Using individual librarian schedules, determines weekly and monthly scheduling of reference desk service. Gathers statistics from various programs to compile regular reports. Works with Instruction / Reference librarian to select and develop training topics. Provides back up to Circulation desk personnel as needed. Understands Circulation tasks. Supervises Access Services student workers.

Minimum Qualifications
Two years of general library experience including typing, ordering, preparing, shelving, and maintaining library materials.

Substitutions
Two years of course work from an accredited college or university including twelve semester hours of library science course work may substitute for two years of the general library experience. If using this substitution, an unofficial copy of your transcripts must be submitted at the time of application

Preferred Qualifications

  • College research experience or academic library reference experience, please specify the subjects in which you have done in depth research
  • Library work experience (specify the type of library work you performed and the percentages, i.e. 70% circulation, 20% shelving, 10% reference). Academic library experience is preferred
  • Working knowledge of instructional technology software (please list the types you have used)
  • Reference desk experience
  • Working knowledge of the Library of Congress call number system
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (please note on your application your years of experience)
