Job Description
Nature of Work: This position is located in the Preservation Department of the University Libraries and exists to provide general support to the unit by: collection assessment, bindery preparation and book repair – specifically conservation treatments. Conservation skills for paper-based media are required, including both bound volumes and flat documents. At least 50% of the position will be in the conservation treatment of library materials, up to and including a full re-case. Additional responsibilities include preservation assessment and treatment recommendations for library materials and performing bindery preparation of volumes which require re-binding by the commercial bindery.Additional Info & Requirements
Minimum Requirements: Two years of general library experience involving typing, ordering, preparing, shelving, maintaining library materials AND preservation treatment of library materials, including bound volumes and flat documents. Substitution: Two years of course work from an accredited college or university including twelve semester hours of library science course work, which must have included conservation and preservation courses, may substitute for two years of the general library experience. Highly Desirable Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have excellent book repair skills from basic techniques up through a full re-case; knowledge of the conservation of various non-book media, especially photographic media; possession of leather binding skills; digitization and experience with Microsoft Excel and Access databases.
