Job Description

Could you be our next Library Director?

The Libbie Cass Library is looking forward to hiring a half-time library director (with the possibility of increased hours in the future) who would be eager to work with its trustees to improve the contributions of the library to the town of Springfield. The library is at a crucial time of innovation and growth and needs someone interested in continuing to usher it forward into the 21st century.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited college
  • Experience with an online cataloging system


Desirable, but not required

  • Major in library Science
  • Master's Degree
  • Master's degree in library science
  • Experience in community relations
  • Experience as librarian in town library
  • Experience as library director
  • ​Experience with Apollo Biblionix


Position Opportunities:
Administer the total library program: this includes but is not limited to filling patron requests for inter-library loans and new purchases; developing the library collection, meeting patron needs as well as improving quality of services; weeding the collection, checking in and out materials and shelving; overseeing appearance, amenities, and the upkeep thereof; overseeing volunteer program including recruiting, training, scheduling, keeping communication channels effective; improving community relations including outreach; developing programs, both educational and entertaining, guaranteeing the library is open when it should be; keeping a watchful eye on the building and physical facilities; directing the library to purchase the best supplies at the most reasonable prices; and supervising the scholarship fund in various manners.

​Observe and follow the distinctions between the roles of the Library Director and those of the Trustees in all areas relating to policies and finances of the library. Understand and adhere to the defined boundaries between these positions.

Recommend for employment or termination of other staff members as necessary and legal and to the trustees who would decide the appropriate action (s). To submit to the trustees for approval of all promotions and salary increases.

Attend and contribute to all appropriate meetings called by the trustees. If necessary, to designate a substitute to attend.
To prepare all necessary local, state, or federal budgets or reports in conjunction with the trustees.

​Originate and/or prepare grant requests for private or governmental assistance to improve the library.

To work with the town officials as necessary including maintaining information to meet the needs of auditors.

We are a small, rural community with a patron base of about 500 and a population of 1400.
