Job Description

The Institutional Repository Program Manager plans, implements, and evaluates sustainable institutional repository (IR) technologies, services, and policies. In addition, it establishes IR ingestion, curation, and publication practices in support of research across the disciplines. This is a highly impactful role as it enables research and scholarship produced by CU Boulder faculty, staff, and students to reach the widest possible audience. The position requires an understanding of and ability to make critical decisions related to scholarly research and publication practices as well as to copyright issues. This role requires strong interpersonal skills to support and collaborate with faculty and students across all disciplines, Libraries faculty and staff (including technologists), and vendors; requiring facility with IR software platforms, particularly with regard to developing and improving workflows.

CU Boulder’s IR (CU Scholar) currently contains over 5,000 research and scholarly outputs that have been downloaded a total of over 450,000 times worldwide. This position will be responsible for helping to expand these numbers significantly, which will enhance the global reach and reputation of CU Boulder research and scholarship. This is a high-level priority for the Libraries as outlined in the organization’s strategic plan.

What your key responsibilities will be:

Management of the Institutional Repository

  • Manage the CU Scholar IR operations, workflows, protocols, policies, and procedures in keeping with IR best practices as well as copyright and other relevant guidelines.
  • Ensure responsive and timely support for CU faculty, staff, and students submitting research and scholarship to the IR.
  • Answer general inquiries, fulfill requests, and serve as first point of contact for technical support related to the IR.
  • Provide oral and written instruction to IR contributors and users.
  • Develop and implement workflows that lower the barrier of engagement with the IR for faculty, staff, and students, in close collaboration with the Scholarly Communication Librarian.
  • Establish practices for curation of digital objects housed in the IR in line with national and international standards and best practices. Maintain and quality-check metadata according to standards, and conduct quality checks on IR submissions.
  • Assist in development of a comprehensive marketing strategy and enact plans for assessing and promoting the use of the IR.
  • Contribute to IR user needs analysis, product evaluation, selection, customization, testing, and implementation/migration.

Vendor Relations

  • Interface with IR software vendor support team. Communicate changing user needs and requirements.
  • Troubleshoot IR software issues, and report problems in a timely manner. Ensure that vendor addresses issues in a timely manner.

Regular Reporting

  • Provide analyses and data to the department on IR deposits and usage.
  • Prepare statistics and reports for internal and external use (e.g., reporting to the Association of Research Libraries).

Personnel Management and Other Departmental Duties

  • May supervise student assistants and/or provide other support in line with the priorities of the department.

Professional Development

  • Stay current on IR international and national standards and best practices by reading professional publications, attending instruction sessions, and consulting with other department members.
  • Attend workshops and continuing education opportunities related to IRs.
