Job Description
Provides reader’s advisory service to patrons by locating and selecting reading material in accessible formats. Direct and advise print-disabled patrons in their selection of recreational and informational reading materials by answering incoming phone calls and emails from patrons statewide; advising and disseminating general information to patrons. Continuously develops a strong knowledge of the library collections and evaluates their strengths and weaknesses.
Participates in organizing and supporting patron participation in reading activities, such as book talks, reading clubs, discussion groups, and written reading advisory handouts; assists in the evaluation of these activities.
Participates in developing and implementing outreach activities, in cooperation with the Director; assists in the evaluation of these activities. Attends public awareness and outreach events; provides input into the development of same. Actively seeks new ways of promoting the Talking Book Program.
Provides technical support to patrons on matters related to use of CTBL and National Library Services (NLS) equipment and services, such as Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service, BARD Mobile, the web OPAC and the digital talking book machine (DTBM). Assists with patron BARD registrations, purchased player approval requests, and other BARD tasks.
Provides basic reference services, including online research at patron’s requests.
Initiates, plans, and conducts summer reading program and activities to encourage continuation of reading during the summer.
Recommends acquisition of materials for the Reader Services professional collection and provides input regarding the circulating collection.
Onboard new patrons either in person or via the mail; identify and solve any related problems through patron contact; and assist on-site patrons with needs for new equipment, books, library registration and general information. This position resolves problems with applications; patron transfers; inter-library loans and any other patron issue that might arise. Completes any related patron paperwork or requests.

•Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
•Position is non-exempt and is eligible for compensatory time for additional hours beyond 40 worked within the week.
•Selected applicant is an employee at will.
•Direct deposit of paychecks is required.
•Smoking is not allowed in the State Office Building and is allowed only in designated areas outside the State Office Building.
•Selected applicant must comply with the Colorado State Board of Education’s Drug-Free Workplace policy.
•As required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), the selected applicant must verify, within 72 hours of employment, his/her legal right to be employed in the United States.
- 1 year experience developing library programing
- 1 year experience developing summer reading programs
- 1 year experience in customer service
- 1 year experience phone duty
- Ability to work with diverse personalities
- Enthusiasm and interest in promoting library service for readers with disabilities.
- Excellent demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated attention to detail
- Demonstrated experience working with technology, spreadsheets and databases
- Ability to pass a background check
The Community
That All May Read - The Colorado Talking Book Library provides free library service to over 7,000 Coloradans of all ages who are unable to read standard print material due to visual, physical or learning disabilities whether permanent or temporary. CTBL provides audio, Braille and large-print books and magazines. We have a large volunteer program and Friends group that support the library in serving our patrons. This position works closely with two other reader advisers and most interaction with patrons is over the phone.
