Job Description

The Director of Resource Services provides leadership and strategic visioning for the technical services functions of library materials licensing and acquisitions and resource description management and metadata activities to support the teaching, learning and research needs of the university community. The Director provides leadership for a user- centered approach to resource services operations. The Director manages the areas of acquisitions, cataloging, database and electronic resource management, government documents, periodicals and physical processing of new and deselected materials. This position is responsible for developing standards and best practices: 1) for acquiring electronic and print resources from publishers and vendors in a variety of formats, 2) for organizing, classifying and processing library materials and 3) for daily operations of the Federal Depository Library Program. The Director supervises tenure track faculty librarian(s) and professional staff.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead, plan, manage, coordinate and evaluate Kent Library’s resource services units by overseeing the acquisition of online, streaming, print and other materials; the description and discover of and access to electronic and print library resources; and the receiving and processing of Federal and State documents
  • Assist in creating, developing, documenting and maintaining resource services policies and procedures and administrative guidelines and processes; manage and streamline workflows; and set priorities for library technical and collection services areas
  • Train, evaluate and supervise resource services staff performing acquisitions, cataloging and government documents processing in accordance with Library and University policies
  • Share responsibility for managing and administering the integrated library system and provide leadership for resource services functions
  • Ensure Kent Library collaborates with University Finance and Administration and follows all University and State budgeting, business and accounting best practices
  • Oversee staff working in metadata and responsible for duties such as record loads and troubleshooting data problems
  • Assist in preparing the annual acquisitions budget and tracking of fiscal year expenditures and create budget, finance, statistical and narrative reports as required or requested
  • Oversee evaluation, acceptance or refusal and processing of materials donated to Kent Library; including acknowledging donor gifts
  • Facilitate and participate in the creation, maintenance and enhancement of metadata across multiple discovery platforms and library systems; including use of applicable tools for manipulating data (such as, MARCEdit, XML and import/export rules)
  • Maintain knowledge of national, regional and local cataloging policies, standards and practices; including Resource Description and Access (RDA) cataloging rules, MARC records, Library of Congress Subject (LCSH) headings, authority control, Dewey Decimal classification and bibliographic utilities such as OCLC
  • Lead bibliographic authority work
  • Serve as liaison librarian to assigned academic departments; liaison activities include: building and maintaining close relations with students and faculty in order to meet their learning, teaching and research needs through information literacy instruction, communication, program development, information sharing (using tools such as LibGuidesTM), collection development and information gathering
  • Provide leadership in the assessment of library services and collections
  • Contribute to the library management team and library committees, activities, and outreach, and to Southeast Missouri State University through faculty governance, committees, councils, and other working groups
  • Lead and complete a wide range of projects
  • Establish and maintain a personal professional development program consistent with promotion, tenure, and post-professorial review

Required Qualifications

  • ALA accredited Master’s degree
  • Minimum of three years of experience as professional librarian; experience in academic library resource services a plus
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a supervisory, management or leadership role
  • Knowledge of cataloging principles, standards, practices and technologies; including RDA, authority control, LCSH, MARC and OCLC or other utility
  • Experience working in a library management system
  • Evidence, or awareness of, acquisitions budgeting, licensing or acquiring of materials
  • Knowledge, or awareness of, current trends in library acquisitions, cataloging or government documents and physical processing
  • Ability to effectively implement change
  • Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work well as a member of a group and individually
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student body and a diverse faculty throughout the University
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community
