Job Description

The Haines Borough, in Southeast Alaska, is currently recruiting qualified applicants to fill the position of Library Director. The ideal candidate will provide a strong library vision while overseeing the administration of an active, award-winning public library. Positive and dynamic leadership for an innovative and creative staff, active volunteers, and a dedicated Friends of the Library Board, is required to enable the Library to continue to meet the growing and changing needs of the community. This position reports to a nine-member Advisory Board and the Borough Manager. In 2005, the Haines Borough Public Library was named “Best Small Library in America” and in 2016 and 2017 was listed as a finalist for the National Medal of Museum and Library Service. The library works in partnership with the Chilkoot Indian Association to provide programs and services directly related to tribal needs. IMLS grant-funded projects connected to this partnership have won two ATALM (Association of Tribal Libraries, Archives, and Museums) “Guardians of Culture and Lifeways” outstanding project awards. The Library annually circulates more than 85,000 items, sees 90,000 visitors, and hosts more than 500 programs with 8,490 attendees. The library is currently in the midst of an expansion project to increase community, conference room, and storage space to meet ever-increasing program and meeting room needs. Qualifications: Master of Library Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association required. Increasing responsibility and work experience with supervising staff, services, and collections with a minimum of 2 years in a public library at management level preferred. Essential attributes and skills include: strong fiscal and budgetary experience; excellent communication and people skills; knowledge of the principles and practices of public library administration; vision, creativity, and enthusiasm. A combination of experience and education (currently pursuing or planning to pursue a MLIS) which demonstrates an equivalent level of expertise may also be considered. Compensation: The salary range for this position is $54,100 – $56,180, DOE. The Community

The Haines Borough, population 2,500,  is located in the northern part of the Alaska Panhandle, near Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and 45 miles from the Canadian border. The community and surrounding area are popular for outdoor recreation. Haines is known to have one of the largest concentrations of bald eagles in North America, has received increasing notice as a heli-skiing site, and is the home for the Southeast Alaska State Fair. Tourists visit in the summer on cruise ships.
