Job Description
The Bessemer Historical Society (BHS) is seeking an assistant archivist for an exempt full time, six-month, grant-funded position. The BHS is in the second year of a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant to process and provide access to 5000 cubic feet of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Co. Archives. The position is available beginning January 2, 2008 and ends June 30, 2008, with the possibility of renewal dependent on funding. Under general supervision of the archivist, the assistant archivist will assist in bringing the grant project to a successful conclusion. Activities will include: assisting with re-housing and inventorying of approximately 1500 cubic feet of archives; writing record group, subgroup and series descriptions; performing EAD encoding of finding aid; supervising the work of archives technicians, interns and students; and helping to prepare a virtual exhibit. The assistant archivist will also be responsible for: providing research assistance, writing reports, promoting the collections’ use through digitization and other activities. Also assists with committee work, fundraising and other duties as assigned.Additional Info & Requirements
Preferred: one year of experience working with archival collections; experience processing large collections, knowledge of EAD, Microsoft Access, internet technologies, and other electronic applications relevant to archives. Required: Excellent oral and written communication skills; organized and detail-oriented; able to work both collaboratively and independently; must have sense of humor; flexible and able to handle changing situations with equanimity; able to use a personal computer and standard office machines; basic clerical skills, including typing, sorting and filing. Required: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and carry out duties which may require strenuous physical work, including standing for extended periods of time, walking, kneeling, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling carts, reaching and lifting.
