Job Description

  • Job Summary
    Under supervision of the Youth Services Librarian, the Youth Services Specialist will provide library services for the Albany County community, with an emphasis on teen (6th – 12th grade) and school age (K-5th) services, programs and materials. This position will also support all Youth Services Department programs and assist the Public Services and/or Circulation Departments.
    Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support the Youth Services Department and overall library services in all aspects
  • Plan, prepare, promote and conduct teen programming, with help and input from the Youth Services Librarian, Young Adult Assistant and teens
  • Plan, prepare, promote and conduct programs for school age youth, with help and input from the Youth Services Librarian and other Youth Service Department members
  • Serve as backup for other youth programs such as storytimes, and special events
  • May work some scheduled hours at Information Desk and/or Circulation Desk, assisting patrons with checking out and locating materials, addressing technology issues, providing reader’s advisory, assisting with electronic resources and sharing community resources
  • Work with community organizations that serve teens and school age children. Collaborate with school librarians, teachers and other youth services workers to promote the library and share programming. Be knowledgeable about community services and opportunities for youth in the community
  • Represent the library at community events such as parades, Farmers Markets, etc.
  • Be sensitive to patron privacy and other library values and advocate for intellectual freedom and freedom of access issues, especially for young adults and youth

  • Promote and maintain the YA collection through displays, weeding and other methods and recommend new items for purchase within budget
  • Assist with shelving and merchandising materials in the YA and Children’s areas
  • Coordinate with Youth Services Department in monitoring budgets for programming and materials. May seek additional funding for services through grant funding when appropriate, in coordination with Youth Services Librarian and ACPL Foundation
  • Purchase, organize and maintain youth programming materials when necessary
  • Serve as a resource and liaison to branch libraries in Centennial and Rock River, May present programs or provide other library services at these locations.
  • Assist in managing the library’s web page and social media presence
  • Submit monthly reports and event statistics
  • Participate in library meetings and committees, attend continuing education training, seek opportunities to learn new things, keep skills up to date and growing and follow current trends in teen and youth library services
  • Maintain a comfortable library atmosphere for teens – keep YA area sharp, tidy and free of distractions. Serve as an advocate for teens and youth in the library and the community. Encourages young adults to use library resources and participate in programs
  • Work well with others, including patrons, volunteers, and fellow staff
  • Is committed to public service values: works well with and is patient and helpful with all patrons, volunteers and other staff members

Additional Info & Requirements

  • Schedule will be Tuesdays 9:30 am – 5:30 pm, Wednesdays 1-7 pm and alternating Thursdays and Saturdays (Thursdays 2-7 pm and Saturdays 12-5 pm) Schedule may be open to some negotiation
  • Ability and flexibility to occasionally adjust schedule to accommodate special programs and/or outreach events
  • Competent in using and assisting others with technology including email, social media, web searching and mobile devices
  • Library and library materials knowledge with a preference given to those with library experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work with youth, especially young adults, in a library, school, or social service setting
  • Required background check for final candidate.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, a good driving record, and be able to meet the driver policy requirements. Documentation will be required for final candidate.
