The Library Director manages and directs a library staff of 34 (13 full time), with an annual operating budget of $1.877 million. 67% of the library’s operating funds come from the State of Ohio’s Public Library Fund, 30% come from local property taxes and the remaining 3% come from fees and miscellaneous sources. Approximately 223,000 items circulate in all three locations annually.
Strong applicants will be progressive and forward thinking in terms of technology and the evolution of public library services, have a successful fundraising record, provide evidence of significant library experience at the administrative level, and provide evidence of the ability to foster an authentic connection to a local community. Excellent candidates will have strong social skills, and be able to manage and collaborate with library staff and local citizens with ease.
DPLS includes a main library, located in Defiance, Ohio, and two branch libraries in Sherwood and Hicksville. Defiance is a historic small town nestled on the banks of the Maumee and Auglaize Rivers. The main library, a beautiful red stone Carnegie library, sits at the confluence of the two rivers. The county has a population of 40,000.
