Job Description

Under the direction of the Metropolitan Library Commission, the executive director provides strategic, visionary and inspirational leadership for the Metropolitan Library System.

The executive director is responsible for leading the organization toward achieving the Library’s vision, mission, goals and strategic initiatives by providing highly responsible guidance, direction and support to the Library Commission and staff to develop long-term plans and directions for the Library; planning and directing the overall operations and management of MLS; providing effective leadership to the staff; working collaboratively with the Friends of the Library, the Metropolitan Library Endowment Trust, civic organizations and community agencies; and working effectively with state and local elected officials.

The executive director functions with a maximum degree of latitude for independent action within the scope of the organizational policy set by the Library Commission.

The Community

The Oklahoma City (OKC) Metro Area is vibrant, progressive and friendly. A strong and growing economy combined with low housing prices and cost of living attracts people of all ages. The area is becoming increasingly diverse with new residents from Latin America and Asia adding to the population mix.

In 2015, Oklahoma City was chosen as one of the first two pilot cities for the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Initiative on Innovation and Placemaking by the Brookings Institute and Project for Public Space. The area surrounding the Oklahoma Health Center will be a place for business incubator projects, the city’s bioscience sector and future developments.

Major revitalization efforts in downtown OKC are creating exciting cultural and sports venues as well as a strong business center. The Bricktown Entertainment District, Film Row, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum attract residents and visitors alike. The new American Indian Cultural Center and Museum will open in 2022.

Cheers for sports teams like the National Basketball Association OKC Thunder, the Los Angeles Dodgers Triple-A Affiliate OKC Dodgers, and the United Soccer League OKC Energy have contributed to OKC’s nickname as “Loud City”. The University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University are within one hour’s drive and have quality sports teams.

With more than 300 days of sunshine each year, outdoor activities are plentiful and families can enjoy rowing, canoeing, and kayaking on the Oklahoma River, which is home to a high performance training center for Olympic athletes. Hiking, biking and picnicking are also right out the back door. The urban downtown center and adjacent lovely suburban communities give singles, couples and families a great range of living choices.
