Job Description

The Johnson County Library seeks a collaborative, community-focused, innovative librarian to serve as a leader in our Civic Engagement initiatives.  Reporting to the Adult Services Manager, this position will provide community focused programming and reference and outreach services to the citizens of Johnson County, KS.  The Civic Engagement Librarian will co-lead the civic engagement committee, working closely with the librarian team, adult and youth information specialists and community partners to engage the community in meaningful ways.  Johnson County Library’s Civic Engagement initiatives connect people, help the community problem solve, support electoral participation and educate the public on pertinent local issues.  We strive to build strong relationships with local communities, governments, nonprofit organizations and educational institutions to address the interests and needs of our citizens.  We are always looking for great people and have other openings for this job.  This posting will be open through 4:00 p.m. on (October 29, 2018).  Qualified applicants will remain as an active candidate for a period of up to 90 days.

  • Provides informational service to patrons, both in person and remotely; develops and maintains product knowledge regarding resources for specific age readers in order to promote literacy and meet the informational needs of patrons; instructs and assists with library resources, digital literacy and information requests; utilizes Guidelines for Enforcing Patron Code of Behavior to maintain a safe and comfortable environment; upholds intellectual freedom.
  • Provides, promotes, evaluates and supports age-appropriate programs for patrons that fulfill the strategic plan; develops and maintains relationships with community organizations and institutions; promotes systemwide programs, outreach and initiatives.Follows the trimester programming calendar and programming procedures.
  • Create and maintain spaces for patrons of all ages that promote creativity, critical thinking and literacy; evaluates the collection to ensure it meets the needs of the community by collaborating with the Collections Department; merchandises the collection and ensures it is accessible, attractive, and balanced; completes site checklist for opening and closing, stocks library service points with necessary resources, keeping the work area neat and organized.
  • Leads and oversees an adult services focus area or a branch youth services team, coordinating the collections, programs, and outreach; partners with staff to carry out strategic initiatives; collaborates with manager to spend funds appropriately for programming and other needs regarding focus area. Plans and schedules programming and outreach events; coordinates with library staff in other locations to determine branch needs; writes and receives correspondence to colleagues, stakeholders and patrons; collaborates with librarian team to ensures a system-wide focus.
  • Works with supervisor, subject matter experts and Learning & Development to identify training, development and growth opportunities and requirements; engages and looks for value in all coaching and learning opportunities; acquires and applies knowledge and skills gained.
