Job Description

Montana State University Library seeks a non-tenure track Open Educational Resources Coordinator to develop the Montana Board of Regents Open Educational Resources Initiative. This person will work closely with the Treasure State Academic Information and Library Services (TRAILS) consortium.

The Montana University System’s Open Educational Resources (OER) Coordinator develops the Montana Board of Regents OER Initiative, which is to be implemented by the Treasure State Academic Information and Library Services (TRAILS) consortium. OER are license-free textbooks and other educational resources, and the Montana OER Initiative is a cooperative effort that will encourage and incentivize faculty to create their own OER or modify or use existing OER. The OERInitiative is intended to encourage the use of open educational resources throughout the Montana University System, with the intent of reducing student textbook costs, improving student outcomes, and improving faculty and student experiences. The OER Coordinator will report to the TRAILSCoordinator and will work closely with the TRAILS OER Committee. Funded by the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education (OCHE), this non-tenure track faculty position will be reviewed for continuation after three years.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the TRAILS Coordinator, the TRAILS OER Committee, the Open Textbook Network and other entities, to create and direct a statewide OER implementation plan.
  • Serve as an effective OER advocate and leader among faculty and students across the MUS.
  • Work with OER partners to develop clear definitions for OER to ensure consistent and clear messaging.
  • Schedule information and training sessions for faculty, students, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Coordinate the mapping of Montana’s core curriculum to relevant OER material.
  • Help create a TRAILS OER website and a statewide OER portal to organize and provide access to relevant OER content for Montana faculty.
  • Establish a faculty incentive program in the form of a TRAILS OER Grant Program.
  • Use baseline data from a planned statewide OER survey to inform initiative efforts.
  • Track progress of the OER initiative through evaluative data and provide ROI information.
  • Serve as the Montana Liaison to the WICHE/WCET Z initiative.
  • Investigate standards for faculty OER creation (e.g. QualityMatters.org).

Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funding. Funded by the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education (OCHE), this non-tenure track faculty position will be reviewed for continuation after three years.

Non-Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Faculty covered by AFMSU must begin paying either membership dues or representation fees within thirty (30) days of hire. This is a condition of employment.   • Any position less than .5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues.
  • If the FTE changes during employment, the representational status of this position could be impacted.
