Job Description

Provide reference and reader’s advisory services using both print and electronic resources. Answer questions in person and over the telephone. Interview users and determine information needs. Locate materials to provide patrons with requested service. Provide assistance in location and use of federal government publications. Instruct library users in the use of the Public Access Catalog, print resources, and electronic resources including the Internet and databases. Select and order adult circulating and reference materials within budget allocations. Maintain statistics. Take Inter-Library Loan requests. Coordinate the design, development, and maintenance of Library’s web site. Work with other library and city staff to facilitate continual updating and upgrading of web site content. Maintain quality public service by providing direct service to library patrons at the reference desk. Explain and enforce library policies and procedures. Select books and other materials for collection. Maintain designated area of book collection by weeding and discarding, mending, or rebinding, reordering if necessary, and updating materials. Review and keep abreast of major selection tools; review books, periodicals and collections which are outdated or not used, and recommend removal and disposition. Plan and conduct special library programs; prepare publicity for all programs and services in assigned area. Conduct tours of library program area and present information to community organizations and groups. Coordinate displays and bulletin boards for program area. Research the availability of grant monies and prepare grant applications; solicit funds and donations for library programs in accordance with priorities set by the Library Strategic Plan. Collaborate with other library and city staff in developing services and programs. Assist with the development and implementation of the library’s automated programs and services. Provide assistance in the use of equipment and software to both staff and patrons. May participate in regional consortium activities or committees. Work with the city and consortium IT staff in diagnosing computer and network problems. Provide on-the-job training to personnel and volunteers as needed. Issue written and oral instructions. Participate in the review of job applicants and in the interview process when appropriate. Assume responsibility for operation of the department in the absence of the Manager. Provide input to budget for assigned area. Evaluate service costs and make related recommendations. Identify and recommend improvements in divisional and departmental operations to ensure assigned functions are efficient and cost effective. Prepare reports, collect statistics and keep records as assigned. Read professional publications and attend professional meetings to keep informed of new publications and library materials, services, and current events that affect assigned program area. Perform related duties as required.
