The Community

Santa Fe, the nation’s oldest capital city, has been at the crossroads of historic trails and cultures. It enjoys a unique blend of Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo culture and has earned its old nicknames “The Dancing Ground of the Sun” and “The City Different.”

The Santa Fe Public Library consists of three branches—the downtown Main Library, the midtown La Farge Library, and the Southside Library. The city population is 83,000, but the library also serves county residents. The annual budget is $4 million. The library has the support of an advisory board and a very active Friends of the Library organization. It is currently undertaking a planning study with library consultants to assess what Santa Fe needs to make a 21st century library.

This creates a perfect opportunity for a Library Director who can be unifier and a change agent with a clear vision for a 21st century library as a crucial hub in a diverse community.

The library is a division of the city’s Community Services Department along with Senior Services, the Youth and Family Services, and the Office of the Municipal Public Defender. The common vision is that all residents have the resources they need for health, wellbeing, and a high quality of life.

Santa Fe is settled at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which provides a lovely fall and winter, and a ski area, as well as cool nights through the summer. It is close to forests and a wilderness area and ancient pueblos and Albuquerque. The light is gorgeous, the food is delicious, and the variety of cultures, cultural centers, museums, art galleries, music venues, and daily happenings is remarkable for a city its size.
