Job Description

This is a one-year, Librarian I position. Masters of Library Science/ Information Science degree or the ability to obtain one in six months from position closing from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association is required. The candidate will perform a variety of professional librarian functions, with a focus on adult collection development for various formats. In addition to collection development, the candidate will provide reference and advisory services, act as the Person in Charge and participate in all levels of library work.

The ideal candidate is aware of trends in publishing and pop culture.  They will evaluate and select materials in various formats, working to develop and maintain areas of the adult collection using professional resources, judgment, and internal collection policies and procedures.  The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills and the ability to work well within a group.

Knowledge and Application of:
• Principles of positive, friendly customer service;
• Methods and techniques for locating Library materials;
• Cataloging and classification systems, including the Dewey Decimal System;
• Standard Reference sources in the Library field;
• Library-provided databases;
• Current literature and new developments in library science;
• Computer hardware and software, including Microsoft Office;
• Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.

The Community

The Durango Public Library serves all of La Plata County, with the Main Library in town and two branch libraries in local elementary schools. The Library is a department of the City of Durango.
