The successful Library Security Monitor is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the safety and security of library patrons, employees, and library environment while delivering the library’s mission, guiding principles, and core values. The Library Security Monitor also delivers exceptional customer service at the library’s customer service-checkout desk; works with the Customer Experience (CX) Division Manager to monitor facility issues, vandalism and theft; and actively engages with visitors and staff to create a welcoming and respectful environment while ensuring compliance with library standards of behavior, and assisting the CX Manager with development and delivery of security training to library employees is required.

The salary range for this position is $16.25- $23.61 per hour with a hiring range of $16.25 - $19.93,depending on qualifications and experience.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:

  • Maintains a friendly, positive, and visible presence in the library.
  • Interacts with library patrons and staff in a friendly, positive, and helpful manner; maintains the dignity of all library patrons while preserving and enhancing the culture of the Library.
  • Maintains alert and visible presence by regularly patrolling all areas in the library and select areas outside the library. Skillfully responds to and resolves patron incidents and other security issues.
  • Provide friendly, skillful service at the customer service-checkout, including issuing library cards, checkouts, informing patrons about library resources, and providing directional assistance.
  • Explains library policy and behavioral guidelines. Proactively and discreetly advises patrons of library policy including behaviors that may lead to loss of privileges.
  • Responds to staff calls for assistance in person, by phone, or two-way radio.
  • Answers incoming calls at service and checkout desk.
  • Accurately logs incident accounts, completes necessary forms, and advises library staff of all security issues and incidents in a timely manner.
  • Maintains good communication with city contracted security and Loveland police.
  • In the absence of the CX Manager and if necessary, liaise with Risk Management and Facilities.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Monitor front entrance during heavy foot-traffic times such as opening/closing and special meetings and events.
  • Monitor surveillance cameras.
  • Attend general staff and division meetings and professionally communicate with staff via email, one-on-one, or general staff meetings.
  • Serves on the Library and/or City Safety Committee.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, skills & abilities:

Ability to communicate in a professional, diplomatic, cooperative, and respectful manner in all security and service interactions, with a special emphasis on maintaining the dignity of patrons and maintaining library culture.

Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional customer service.

Demonstrated conflict resolution, de-escalation, courteous communication, and boundary-setting skills.

Ability to problem solve using independent judgment.

Ability to adapt to a changing library environment.

Education and/or experience:

High school diploma or G.E.D. Undergraduate degree preferred. Two (2) years of experience required in one of the following: police, emergency medical services, security.  Two (2) years of experience in a customer service role, preferably in a library environment required.  An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may substitute for education requirement on a year-for-year basis. Moderate fluency in Spanish is desired. Some understanding of current public library policy. Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook proficiency required as well e-mail, voicemail, and time management software.

Material and equipment directly used:

Phone, two-way radio, computers, checkout scanner, printers, laminators, book carts and bins, copiers, cash register, credit card machine, express check-out machines, security gates and general office equipment.

Working conditions and physical requirements:

Work hours to include days, evenings, and weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). Will work in a dynamic library setting with extensive public contact. Requires walking, climbing stairs, sitting, or standing for extended periods of time. Ability to lift and carry materials up to 40 lbs., and push carts up to 50 lbs. Bending and reaching up to and from 5” to 80” above the floor.
