Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: Under supervision of the Branch Manager, provides library services and materials to the community served by the branch, including information services, readers’ advisory services, circulation, and programming. Directs daily operations, supervises, and schedules branch staff. Assumes responsibility for the branch in the absence of the Branch Manager. DUTIES: 1. Provides excellent customer service, employing communication skills necessary to effectively determine the needs of the patrons, and providing significant information and readers’ advisory services. 2. With supervision from the Branch Manager, directs the daily operation of the branch: manages daily workflow; accounts for and reports cash receipts; reports statistics, and signs timesheets 3. Performs daily supervision of branch staff, substitutes and volunteers, including training, assigning work and arranging schedules. 4. Makes recommendations to the Branch Manager regarding facility maintenance, security, and operational functions. Initiates appropriate procedures in the event of an emergency. 5. Understands and applies library policies, procedures, and services. 6. At the Information Desk, assists patrons in the use of the library and oversees circulation functions. 7. Trains patrons in use of the online library catalog, databases, and Microsoft Office applications. Troubleshoots basic computer and office equipment problems. 8. Actively promotes library services and materials through publicity, merchandising, programs, tours, and community outreach. 9. Responsible for branch programs as assigned. Participates in children’s programs when necessary. 10. Works with the Branch Manager and Collection Development to maintain a collection plan that meets the needs of the branch community. 11. Keeps current with new, popular materials of interest to branch patrons. Maintains knowledge of print and electronic reference resources. 12. Participates in the interview and selection process for new branch staff. 13. Serves on library committees or teams as assigned. 14. Keeps informed about library and departmental information and charges via electronic and written mail and attendance at staff meetings. 15. Performs other job-related duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES: 1. Ability to provide efficient, courteous public service to a diverse patron population and to present a positive image of the library in attitude, appearance, and performance of duties. 2. Ability to communicate courteously and work effectively with staff in a team setting. Demonstrates a willingness to contribute ideas, maintain flexibility, and support changes within the organization. 3. Demonstrates organizational and supervisory skills necessary to assist the Branch Manager in the efficient operation of the branch library. 4. Ability to handle a variety of situations in a calm and professional manner and to act appropriately under pressure. 5. Applies knowledge of library materials using effective reference interviewing techniques to match patrons with materials and services appropriate to their interests and abilities. 6. Knowledge of library services and computer programs, Microsoft Office applications, organization of library materials, general library practices, and general office procedures and equipment. 7. Demonstrates skill necessary to communicate effectively with staff, patrons, and groups both verbally and in written form. 8. Ability to plan and organize individual and branch projects. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Requires a BA or BS degree from a 4-year liberal arts college or university 2. Requires a minimum of two years of library or other public service work experience. Previous supervisory experience preferred. 3. Requires excellent communication skills, the ability to work in a team environment, a “whatever it takes” work ethic, and an excellent customer service attitude. Bilingual ability is a plus. 4. Requires the ability to work Thursdays from noon - 9 p.m., every other Saturday from 9 am - 6 p.m. and work occasional Sunday afternoons from 1 - 5 p.m. Requires 2+ years of library or other public service work experience. Previous supervisory experience preferred. Bilingual ability is a plus!
