Job Description

Welcome to Montrose, Colorado, a small-yet-mighty town situated in the Uncompahgre Valley of the American West. Views surround you here: to the west, the Uncompahgre Plateau spans the horizon, harboring canyons and petroglyphs, rivers and cacti; Grand Mesa—the largest flat-topped mountain in the world—looms to the north; the “Steep, Deep, and Narrow” Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park—boasting Colorado’s biggest cliff and exposed rock over 2 million years old—is just a 10-minute drive to the east; and all the while, the rugged San Juan Mountains tower in the south, beckoning you to adventure. If you love the outdoors, history, and geology, Montrose is the town for you. We are a rapidly growing hub to the Western Slope of Colorado, and our friendly, supportive, and award-winning library district provides crucial resources to the area.

Are you passionate about providing exceptional service to the community? Are you brimming with bold, innovative ideas and champing at the bit to bring them to the public? Are you ready to take your librarianship to the next level? Montrose Regional Library District is seeking a high-energy, fun-loving, go-getting, savvy and seasoned librarian to join our Adult Services.

The daily job duties of an Adult Services Librarian are never dull. Education and assistance with computers and other technologies, digging deep into reference questions, managing collections, local history and genealogy research, reader’s advisory, adult and teen programming, and community outreach…these are just a few responsibilities that are juggled with finesse, positivity, and confidence, when dealing with patrons of all ages and from all backgrounds. Our librarians also write for local publications, provide library tours, participate in various library committees, and partner with other community organizations. We value candidates with Spanish-language facility (nearly a quarter of our population are native Spanish speakers); flexibility to work nights and weekends as assigned; and the ability to perform more physically intensive duties, which can include lifting/pushing heavy materials, bending and kneeling, and being mobile for much of the day.

Due to the nature of this position, we prefer a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited university and one year of varied and robust experience in a public library. We offer very generous benefits including health, dental, vision, and life insurance; retirement; and vacation, personal, and sick leave, in addition to holidays. The starting rate for an Adult Services Librarian is $17.00/hour, with an additional increase for a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited university; an increase will also be given for proficiency in Spanish.

If you feel you would make a fabulous contribution to our library, please contact Lindsay Beckman, Head of Adult Services, with your resume and cover letter:
