Job Description

Share your passion for service as the next Director of the Kirkwood Public Library (Missouri). The nine-member Board of Trustees seeks a Director who will embrace a focus on thoughtful, sustainable library services and programs for all Kirkwood residents. Diversity and inclusivity are key as the Library adopts its new 2020 Strategic Plan moving the Library into the future while respecting its tradition. Serving the 27,000 residents of Kirkwood from a single location, the 45 member staff offer cutting edge technologies and excellent digital and print collections supported by an annual $2 million operating budget. The Library is also a member of the nine-library Municipal Library Consortium allowing it to expand its holdings to its customers. Additional support comes from a large volunteer corps, the bookstore (Books & Beyond), and passport services.

Our community. Located in Southwest St. Louis County, Kirkwood, Missouri (nine square miles) is home to a vibrant small town atmosphere with strong community involvement. The area boasts high property values, quality public and private schools, safe neighborhoods and exceptional City services. More than 300 acres of park land can be found throughout the community, from a large central park that includes an aquatic center, ice rink, outdoor amphitheater, ball fields, tennis courts, picnic sites, and playground areas, to smaller neighborhood parks. The Downtown Kirkwood Business District is on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to many restaurants and shops as well as the Kirkwood Farmers’ Market. Responsibilities. The Director is responsible for all aspects of the Library’s administration in support of the Board approved mission statement and policies. Broad areas for concentration include Public Service, Administrative Management, Staff Management, Collection Development, and Board Support. See the Position Description for further details.

Qualifications. Minimum qualifications include a Master’s in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program and four years of experience in an administrative capacity. The Director must have sound decision-making skills; proven ability to recruit and retain staff through mentoring, coaching and supervising; a commitment to a high level of public service; budgeting and finance experience; support for diversity and inclusivity as core values; and a desire to be the Library’s representative to external organizations and agencies. Experience reporting to a governing board is preferred.

Compensation. The hiring range is $75,400-95,650 with an excellent benefits package.
