Job Description

The City of Aurora is seeking an energetic Youth Services Librarian at the Aurora Central Library to provide high level of customer service to children, teens, and adults. This full-time professional position will provide reference services to patrons of all ages, create and perform storytimes, develop engaging programs for youth, assist with collection development, lead library tours, represent the library at outreach events, and other duties as assigned.  

The work schedule for the Youth Services Librarian will be either:  

Sunday 9 – 6 pm 
Monday 9 – 6 pm
Tuesday 11 – 8 pm
Wednesday 9 – 6 pm 
Thursday 9 – 6 pm 

-or- 

Sunday 9 – 6 pm 
Monday 11 – 8 pm
Tuesday 9 – 6 pm
Wednesday 9 – 6 pm 
Thursday 9 – 6 pm 

Work hours and work days may be subject to change in the future depending upon staffing needs.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform high level reference searches using library resources, on-line databases, and other reputable sources
  • Assist customers with accessing and using library resources and answering computer questions
  • Plan and perform story times
  • Develop and host programs for youth and teens
  • Develop, plan, and participate in outreach events that may include attending fairs/events to represent the library at booths, and/or speaking to classrooms
  • Supervise teen volunteers
  • Assist with suggesting youth titles for purchase, as well as maintaining relevance of youth services collection
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Master's Degree or current enrollee in Masters of Library Science from an ALA accredited program.

A Master's Degree in another field with relevant library experience may be considered.

Experience:

  • At least 6 months professional library experience
  • 1 year of public library experience working with children and teens (Preferred) 

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the principles, organization, and practices of library service; library classification system; Internet computerized systems and their applications to assigned functions; basic trouble-shooting in computer operation.

Abilities:

  • Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; communicate with diverse customers/staff of all ages in a professional, age and culturally, appropriate manner; communicate effectively in writing; use general office equipment, computers, calculators, and copy/fax machine; perform basic mathematical calculations; follow oral and written instructions; work shifts, including some nights, and weekends.  Ability to speak a second language a plus.


Licenses, Certificates or Equipment Required:

  • Colorado driver's license with good driving history.

This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands

  • Light physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 30 pounds
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination for operation of office equipment
  • Vision for reading and interpreting reports and data analysis and preparation
  • Frequent speech communication, hearing and listening to maintain communication with employees and citizens
  • Considerable walking and standing; frequent pushing, pulling, and climbing

Equipment Used

  • Frequently uses standard office equipment including computer, calculator, multi-line telephones, and copy/fax machines
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
