POSITION DESCRIPTION: Performs all duties related to a professional librarian
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direct supervision of the Head of Youth Services
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May direct work of Library Assistants and volunteers
1. Identifies needs in support of teen services including programming, environment, advocacy, and leadership to help define priorities. Develops goals and measures impacts.
2. Develops programming for the library district with special focus on service to teens. Networks with community groups to promote services and to continually understand adolescent needs. Interact with youth and solicit feedback to develop activities and programming that best meet their needs.
3. Provides leadership and support to department and branch needs. Serves as an example for all staff in providing library service to teens, collaborates, solicits input, and fosters excellent communication. Actively participates and contributes to various library committees and activities.
4. Offers inviting customer service for teens including expert reference service and readers’ advisory to inspire the lifelong love of reading. Demonstrates knowledge and appreciation of teen literature, periodicals and audiovisual materials and current technology trends.
5. Supports development and maintenance for teen collections for the entire district and is instrumental in the acquisitions process.
6. Pursues professional development opportunities and recaps content with others recognizing appropriate audiences and methods for communicating information. Collaborates with fellow professionals and gleans best practices of other library systems when appropriate. Practices self-evaluation and exemplifies advocacy for libraries and youth. Contributes to the overall library profession.
7. Maintains self-development and keeps up-to-date on Library affairs: Attends monthly staff meetings and training; attends external trainings as requested, stays aware of changes via staff wiki.
8. Performs other duties as assigned or requested: Performs additional duties as opportunities arise that assist the department and the Library in achieving specified goals and objectives.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge and current awareness of library principles, practices and tools, procedures, methods, materials, and philosophy
Knowledge of teen age group interests and needs.
Knowledge of standard safety practices
Skill in understanding and applying oral, written, illustrated or demonstrated instructions
Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer
Proficiency in office software and electronic mail
Ability to navigate OPAC and Internet proficiently
Ability to make public presentations
Ability to effectively use all office technology available
Ability to communicate verbally
Ability to maneuver about the library in a timely fashion
Ability to read a minimum print size equal to 10 point
Ability to tolerate dust, mold, etc. that may have accumulated on books.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited graduate program strongly preferred
For the right candidate we will accept an agreement to enroll in an accredited MLS or MLIS program from an ALA-accredited graduate program within six (6) months of employment in this position with the intention of completion within three (3) years.
2 – 3 years’ experience working in a public library setting desirable
Unpaid meal break of at least ½ hour per day to be taken for each 5 hours scheduled.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule and to be available to work flexible hours to cover unplanned staffing shortages.
