Job Description

The Children’s Librarian, Part-time, contributes to the provision of library services to children from birth through age 12 and to adults working with children. This position reports to the Head of Youth Services and works collaboratively with other Children’s Department staff. It is a professional position with primary responsibilities for reference, readers’ advisory and programming.

The schedule of 18 hours per week includes at least one evening per week and every other Saturday. Hourly rate is dependent on experience and qualifications.

Summary

The Children’s Librarian, Part-time, contributes to the provision of library services to children from birth through age 12 and to adults working with children. It is a professional position with primary responsibilities for reference, readers’ advisory and programming.

Duties

Communications:

  • Provides excellent customer service and maintains a courteous, positive image of the Library when interacting with patrons and staff.
  • Contributes to the provision of services that promote early and developing literacy, digital literacy, enthusiasm for reading, and the development of lifelong learning skills.
  • Provides support for children’s formal and individual educational needs.

Reference Services:

  • Provides reference and readers’ advisory services.
  • Maintains familiarity with the children’s collection, both print and digital.
  • Provides technical assistance to patrons using the Library’s electronic resources.
  • Assists and instructs children and adults interested in children’s resources.
  • Assists patrons with computer use and troubleshoots basic computer issues.

Programming:

  • Creates and presents creative, developmentally appropriate programs for children ages 0 – 12 throughout the year.
  • Assists in providing outreach to community groups.
  • Actively participates in creating and developing a robust summer reading program in collaboration with Children’s Department staff.

Other:

  • Participates in collection development, selection and weeding.
  • Assists with publicity and promotion of children’s services as needed.
  • Assists with monitoring behavior in the library, maintains a safe environment for children and families and enforces Library behavior policies.
  • Attends monthly staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.Essential Functions:
  • Knowledge of theories, tools, and current trends in library service to children, child development, children’s literature, and programming for children.
  • Working knowledge of technology sufficient to deal with the day-to-day needs of the department.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal communication skills, as well as effective oral and written presentation skills.
  • Ability to plan, execute and evaluate children’s programs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team player.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Good organizational and planning skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to perform satisfactorily under the stressors of the position.
  • Ability to perform the job in a reasonable time and in a manner that achieves reasonable library performance and quality standards.
  • Ability to multi-task and problem-solve while assisting patrons.
  • Must be enthusiastic, friendly, punctual and possess a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work rotating and various work shifts including evenings and weekends.
  • Maintains a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree from an ALA accredited program in library science preferred. Students and expected graduates of library school programs are encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated public service or customer service experience required.
  • Experience with library service to children preferred.
