Job Description

At Madison Public Library, Librarians develop and deliver library programs and services that celebrate ideas, promote creativity, connect people and enrich lives. Keeping community voice at the forefront, Librarians coordinate, collaborate and work as a team to provide library services for all ages. Librarians promote literacy in many forms and support effective use of library resources, fostering a positive image for the library as they work to identify and meet the needs of the community. Librarians support Madison Public Library's commitment to equity and social justice, promoting increased access and resources for targeted underserved and underrepresented groups. Librarians are community and library leaders, working cooperatively with community members, organizations, and other City of Madison employees to ensure Madison is a safe and healthy place to live, work, learn and play. The successful candidates will work within the framework of Madison Public Library's vision, mission, strategic goals, policies and practices, to implement professional library work at Madison Public Library locations. The work involves providing and overseeing such functions as direct customer assistance at an all-ages public service desk, programming, collaborative projects, collection maintenance, community engagement, and oversight of paraprofessional and hourly staff. Work takes place in library environments and throughout the community. The positions participate actively as part of teams of library staff and/or community stakeholders. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian 3 or Library Supervisor.

The Community

Madison Public Library (MPL) is a dynamic organization that actively embraces the changing role of libraries and was awarded the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. Our new Central Library opened in 2013, featuring a fully equipped media lab, gigabit connectivity, ample meeting rooms, and our critically acclaimed Bubbler program, which has since been able to expand through major grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Our eight neighborhood libraries have similarly embraced new services and technology, such as our Meadowridge Library's community kitchen that supports youth nutrition and food preparation programs. Employment at MPL means working alongside talented people who are deeply committed to service and making a difference in people's lives. Our outstanding and collegial workforce is highly valued by the community, and includes staff members who have received national recognition or awards for their work. We value and support diverse perspectives, intellectual freedom, learning in all forms, collaboration, and innovation.
