Job Description

Are you passionate about providing exceptional service to the community? Are you brimming with bold, innovative ideas and champing at the bit to bring them to the public? Montrose Regional Library District is growing! As we expand our Adult Services department, we are seeking a high-energy, fun-loving, go-getting Adult Services Librarian to highlight our unique resources and bring them to the community.

This Adult Services Librarian position manages our Colorado history collection, which includes circulating and reference collection management, microfilm, and other unique materials; provides research assistance; and creates innovative programming and partnerships within the community to promote our historical and genealogical resources. As part of the Adult Services department, this position will also aid in staffing the reference desk; providing technology assistance and reader’s advisory; contributing to outreach services; and managing adult collections as assigned. Our librarians also write for local publications, provide library tours, and participate in various library committees.

We value candidates who can keep a confident, upbeat, and positive attitude while navigating the ebb and flow of a public library environment; possess strong communication and organizational skills; and are comfortable with people of all ages and from all backgrounds. An ideal candidate will possess Spanish-language facility (nearly a quarter of our population are native Spanish speakers); flexibility to work nights and weekends as assigned; and the ability to perform more physically intensive duties, which can include lifting and pushing heavy materials, bending and kneeling, and being mobile for much of the day.

Due to the nature of this position, we strongly prefer a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited university and one year of varied and robust experience in a public library. We offer benefits including health, dental, vision, and life insurance; retirement; and vacation, personal, and sick leave, in addition to holidays. The starting rate for an Adult Services Librarian is $36,800 annually, with an additional increase for a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited university; we will also provide an increase for proficiency in Spanish.

If you feel you would make a fabulous contribution to our library, please email your resume and cover letter to Lindsay Beckman, Head of Adult Services: lbeckman@montroselibrary.org.

Deadline to apply is February 21, 2020.

The Community

Montrose, Colorado, is a small-yet-mighty town situated in the Uncompahgre Valley of the American West. Views surround you here: to the west, the Uncompahgre Plateau spans the horizon, harboring canyons and petroglyphs, rivers and cacti; Grand Mesa—the largest flat-topped mountain in the world—looms to the north; the “Steep, Deep, and Narrow” Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park—boasting Colorado’s biggest cliff and exposed rock over 2 million years old—is just a 10-minute drive to the east; and all the while, the rugged San Juan Mountains tower in the south, beckoning you to adventure. If you love the outdoors, history, and geology, Montrose is the town for you. We are a rapidly growing hub to the Western Slope of Colorado, and our friendly, supportive, and award-winning library district provides crucial resources to the area.
