Job Description

The Fall River Public Library seeks an experienced librarian to serve as Section Head of Reference Services. The person in this position will be responsible for the oversight, maintenance, and administration of all library reference resources, both print and digital, including but not limited to public and staff computers, microfilm, and management of library website and online resources. The Reference Services librarian will assist library patrons (teens through seniors) with research, education, and technology needs.This position also is responsible for interlibrary loan, collection development, and teaching one-on-one and small-group Tech Help sessions. Willingness to serve as a Passport Acceptance Agent highly desired. 

Examples of Work:

- Instructs public and staff on the use of library technology (computers, scanner, microfilm) and personal e-devices.

- Manages, maintains, and updates reference collection, including a large archival collection of local history material; oversees digitization projects as needed.

- Troubleshoots technology problems; coordinates with regional network (SAILS) as needed.

- May assist with design and content of the library’s web page; responsible for maintaining, testing, and updating links to all online resources; may assist with promoting library services and programs on social media.

- Has the versatility to deal with multiple issues, manage and motivate reference staff, handle problems as they arise, and help out in other areas as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Highly skilled in computers, networking, and other technical applications pertaining to library work; must be able to train others in automated library systems and general technology functions; must be familiar with general library operations and material; willingness to maintain state-of-the-art technical skills. This is a highly technical professional position requiring an in-depth knowledge of the library profession as well as a thorough familiarity with current trends in the library field. Requires a high degree of interaction with other professionals, librarians, and the general public; well-developed interpersonal skills required.

Education and Experience:

A master’s degree in Library Science, Library and Information Services, or the equivalent from an accredited college or university is required. Must also have at least two years’ experience in a library setting, preferably with one year in a supervisory capacity. The Administrator of Public Library Service when recommending employment to the appointing authority reserves the right to consider other qualifications and abilities of applicants for this position and to waive any requirements as long as such waiver is in the best interest of the City of Fall River. Fall River is the tenth largest city in Massachusetts (population 88,857) and is located within the Providence, RI metropolitan area, approximately 53 miles from Boston, 17 miles from Providence, and 20 miles from Newport. It is the home of Battleship Cove, a historic site with the world's largest collection of World War II naval vessels, and the birthplace of Lizzie Borden, accused in the famous axe murders of her father and stepmother. Fall River was a major textile manufacturing center in the 19th century and is still a center of Portuguese American culture, although the current population is more diverse.
