Job Description

This is an exempt, full-time, classified position with full benefits. Expected starting salary is minimum of range 20 $21.68 per hour. 

DESCRIPTION:The Cottonwood Public Library seeks an energetic and community minded leader to serve as its Library Supervisor. Under the direction of the Library Director, kindly engages patrons, creatively implements new ideas, and strategically thinks about the future of the Library. Works collaboratively with library staff and volunteers to collectively problem solve. Work schedule depends on library operating hours, which are currently Mondays through Saturdays.  Hours are subject to change as needed by the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. TASKS: Leads a team of three full-time employees, three to six part-time employees, and oversees the duties of 70 or more volunteers. The Library Supervisor assists the Director in the administration and supervision of the Cottonwood Public Library, which includes policy development, efficient use of resources, the planning and organization of service delivery, development of administrative procedures, staff and meeting room scheduling, and motivating staff to achieve new goals. Establishing high standards of library service is integral to this position. Plans and coordinates operation of the circulation desks and all staff in Adult Services. Ability to locate, apply for, and manage grant opportunities. Creates and implements internal and external marketing materials including the newsletter, social media, public service announcements and fliers.  Manages disputes involving lost, stolen or damaged library materials. Compiles and maintains monthly circulation and cataloging records and reports. Acts as a liaison with the contracted service charged with contacting delinquent patrons. Is responsible for daily and weekly library department cash reports. Monitors patron behavior and maintains the safety of library areas. Organizes, prioritizes, assigns and schedules work in Adult Services. Active in interviewing and hiring, provide employee performance feedback, prepare written evaluations; recommend promotions, discipline, and termination for Adult Service staff. Is responsible for the maintenance and development of the library webpage. Supports and participates in cooperation with the Yavapai Library Network. A collaborative leadership style, an openness to change, a commitment to customer service and sound knowledge and experience for fulfilling community expectations are core to this position. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science.
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system.
  • Knowledge of the latest trends in library science.
  • Skill in conducting research, interpreting data, and drawing conclusions.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining effective interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in interacting with the general public in a positive and educational manner.
  • Skill in troubleshooting all aspects of the PC environment.
  • Skill in grant application and management.
  • Ability to use an integrated library system.
  • Ability to use social media.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Sufficient to effectively and safely perform required duties. This classification involves work in a quiet library setting that requires some physical effort. This classification requires pushing heavy book carts and loaded dollies with weights as high as 100 pounds.  It also requires bending, stooping, rotating of wrists, reaching and climbing on ladders; lifting stacks of books, boxes of books, equipment, supplies, tables, chairs, and other library materials. Ability to read the small print on book spines for re-shelving purposes.  Must have a hearing and speaking ability sufficient to clearly and concisely communicate in person and over the telephone.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:The equivalent of five (5) years professional library experience or three (3) years in a lead or supervisory capacity. Bachelor’s degree in Library Science or related field is required.  A Master of Library and Information Science degree or Library Practitioner’s Certificate is preferred, but not required. OR any combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
