Job Description

Head of Collection Management Health Sciences Library- University of Colorado Denver (UCD) Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC) The University of Colorado Denver (UCD) Health Sciences Library [http://hsclibrary.uchsc.edu] seeks resourceful, energetic, innovative candidates to provide outstanding leadership for a senior level position as Head of Collection Management. The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of acquisitions, collection development, cataloging, and serials. The UCD Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC) includes the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry, the College of Nursing, the Graduate School, and the University of Colorado Hospital. The $35 million, state-of-the-art library opened in October 2007, and is located at the crossroads of the Anschutz Medical Campus and the Colorado Science and Technology Park. The library is the physical and digital hub of knowledge on the campus, coordinating access to information in support of learning, research, clinical care and service to the community. The Health Sciences Library provides the largest collection of health sciences information resources in Colorado with a digital collection of more than 30,000 online journals, hundreds of electronic textbooks, and online databases. Supervision: The Head of Collection Management reports to the Deputy Director. The position has supervisory responsibilities including oversight of both faculty and staff. Major Responsibilities: • Establish policies, procedures, priorities and goals for the department; plan and coordinate departmental activities, workflow patterns, duties, and special projects; • Prepare and monitor a collection budget of approximately $2 million to ensure judicious and timely expenditure of funds; • Manage the overall growth and development of the library collection to include conducting an annual journal review; evaluating and selecting print and electronic resources for purchase, cancellation, withdrawal, or relocation; soliciting input on resources from affiliated users; and coordinating with IT staff on implementation and support of electronic resources; • Collaborate with the Acquisitions Librarian to negotiate license terms and pricing; and work effectively with Procurement Service Center personnel to ensure appropriate university review of licenses; • Oversee management of the library’s electronic resources management system; • Collaborate with the Technical Services Coordinator on digitization projects, institutional repository projects, and cataloging issues; • Serve as a resource for library staff and campus personnel regarding copyright and licensing issues; • Participate in library activities related to open access and scholarly communication issues including archiving and preservation, particularly for digital collections; • Represent the library on university, state, and regional collection management committees and consortia, including the University of Colorado Libraries E-Resources Team; • Serve on the Library Leadership team and assist with library planning, management, and innovation; • Contribute to the public services mission of the library by engaging with one or more other areas of the library including reference, teaching, liaison or outreach activities as time permits.

Additional Info & Requirements

Required • ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science or foreign equivalent • Five years of post-Masters experience in a health sciences, academic, or life sciences library • Two years professional collection management experience with knowledge of trends and practices in information access, acquisitions, collection development, cataloging, and serials • Experience with and knowledge of best practices in licensing and copyright issues in libraries • Proficiency in financial management • Experience planning, organizing, and implementing new and revised services • Supervisory experience • Excellent oral and written communication skills • Strong customer service orientation • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with diverse individuals and function effectively as both a team leader and a team member Preferred • Experience in an academic health sciences environment • 3 or more years supervisory experience, prefer experience managing faculty • Experience with Innovative Interfaces (III) ILS • Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals • Knowledge of trends in academic publishing, scholarly communication and open access, including their effects on resource development • Experience working with approval plans • Knowledge of national cataloging standards and serials management • Familiarity with electronic resource management systems as well as digitization and institutional depository issues
