Job Description

East Greenwich Free Library Director:

The East Greenwich Free Library, a nonprofit public library, established since 1869 has been at the center of community life in East Greenwich for one hundred and fifty years. Serving a population of over 13,000 and housed in an historic building in the center of town, our library has over 80,000 items with a circulation of close to 300,000 per year.  This represents the fourth highest circulation per capita in the state.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and administer library operations and personnel, subject to the approval of the Library Board of Trustees
  • Supervise and evaluate staff based on job description and performance
  • Promote and provide professional development and training
  • Enact protocols for technology upgrading and training
  • Acquire information necessary for specific long- range financial operational planning
  • Design  and implement the state-required five-year plan for public   libraries
  • Explore and actively pursue grant opportunities
  • Manage all facets of the facility, addressing current and future needs and improvements
  • Advise and report to the Board, providing guidance on critical legislation from state, local, and federal governments
  • Enhance community relations through networking and technology
  • Cultivate a relationship with volunteers and the community to foster interest in unique cultural, educational, and public programs
  • Articulate and explain the vision and role of the library to the town, emphasizing the critical contribution of the Library to our residents
  • Establish an exemplary commitment to outstanding customer service
  • Initiate a proactive approach to generate new ideas and connections with the community

Qualifications:

  • Master degree in library science from an ALA accredited school
  • Minimum of 5 years of increasingly responsible professional public library experience, including library management
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to the Board, staff and all levels of library constituents
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience with researching and pursuing grant proposals to fund new or supplementary programs and services
  • Ability to work as a team with staff and board members
  • Proven experience to interact with the public, elected officials, outside organizations and professional associations, including making presentations
  • Extensive experience in financial planning to include preparing and administering budgets 

Compensation:

$72, 000 - $ 82,000 salary, commensurate with experience.  Excellent benefits.
