Job Description

Overview

The Town of Fairhaven is a historic seaside community on the southeastern coast of Massachusetts. Fairhaven is 70 miles from Boston, 25 miles from Cape Cod, and shares a harbor with the City of New Bedford. As of 2020, Fairhaven’s population was 16,140.

Fairhaven has a rich history that includes shipbuilding, sailmaking, whaling, scrimshaw, and a deep connection to the Japanese sister city of Tosashimizu, as the first Japanese-American citizen, Manjiro Nakama, attended school and resided in Fairhaven. Being the site of the first American Revolution naval battle, the birthplace of Joseph Bates (and his Seventh Adventist Church), and the birthplace of Henry Huttleston Rogers (oil tycoon and benefactor) are just some of the historical claims cherished by this quiet community.

Millicent Library is one of the Town’s most treasured assets. Built 1891-1892, and dedicated in 1893, the library was built in the Italian Renaissance style, designed by architect Charles Brigham. It is one of several architectural wonders that create the personality of Fairhaven Center, and its upkeep over the years has been meticulous and thoughtful. The Millicent Library Board of Trustees seeks the next steward who will oversee the library’s tradition of literacy, learning, community, and historical preservation.  The Millicent Library is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

Candidate and Requirements

The successful candidate will have the vision and background to deliver and oversee a dynamic array of library services to the community. The successful candidate will be passionate about lifelong learning, historical preservation, and will keep the Millicent Library on the forefront of industry trends. There is no residency requirement for application. A Master’s degree in Library  Science (MLIS/MLS) is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have strong supervisory experience and at least 3-5 years in a library supervisory role. Other desirable qualities include: experience with creating and maintaining a budget, demonstrated civic commitment, love for community engagement, and proven record of collaborative leadership. The successful candidate will be organized, team-oriented, innovative, and skilled at working with all stakeholders.

Salary and Schedule
The anticipated starting annual salary for the Director of Library Services will be between $75 to 80k, DOQ. The hiring panel will begin reviewing applications on July 10, 2020, and will conclude the recruitment when it identifies the ideal candidate. The Millicent Library is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
