Job Description

Summary Description

Under the general direction of the Library Board of Trustees, provides leadership, management, and oversight to all Library functions, including, but not limited to, the collection of materials, the facility, equipment, and services.  Advises the Board on policies relating to the operation of the library.  Functions as the Board's agent in carrying out contractual and government matters. Collaborates with other libraries and library organizations and education providers to ensure that residents are provided with  opportunities for learning and personal enrichment.

Routine Job Duties/Responsibilities

Implements and manages quality services, collections, resources, and programs for individuals of various ages and backgrounds.  Develops annual budget, approves expenditures, monitors revenues, pursues additional funding and oversees contractual agreements.  Directs the hiring, training, supervision, evaluation, and discipline of staff, adhering to City policy and standards.  Works with Board of Trustees to determine, administer, and evaluate library policies and procedures.  Supervises maintenance of library's building, grounds, and equipment.  Develops a strategic plan for library service in consultation with the Board, staff, and community members, and implements resulting strategic goals and objectives.  Develops, utilizes, and evaluates statistical information, user studies and other devices to measure customer satisfaction and ongoing community needs.  Represents and promotes the library to City and County officials, the public, and community organizations.  Prepares informational materials for monthly Library Board meeting and attends each meeting.  Compiles and maintains library records and prepares reports.  Serves on the Urbandale Public Library Foundation Board and assists with administrative and fundraising activities.  Participates in professional associations, meetings, workshops, and continuing education opportunities.  Keeps informed of innovations, changes, and trends in the library field.  Directs activities of the Library to ensure appropriate communications and coordination occurs with other Departments of the City.  Assures the City's mission, goals and objectives are fully supported and initiated.  Assures that all work performed int eh Library meets the City's standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, and efficiency.  Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Periodic Job Duties/Responsibilities
Represents Library at regional meetings of metro and sate-wide library associations. Attends and represents Library at periodic leadership meetings of City Department Heads and related management teams.  Provides input to Human Resources regarding updates in job descriptions for Library job classifications. Collaborates with other City departments on shard outreach initiatives.

Typical Qualifications

Requires Master's Degree in Library Science and at least six to eight years of public library work experience, five years of which are in a supervisory role.  Requires State of Iowa Public Librarian Level 6 Certification.
