The Cumberland Public Library has an opening for Part-Time Children’s Assistant. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is creative, energetic, and enjoys working with children and their families. Duties include assisting with the provision of children’s services; managing department in absence of Children’s Librarian; reference and research assistance; reader’s advisory; assistance with computer catalog and bibliographic instruction; programming both in person and virtually; supervision of pages and volunteers; displays and exhibit case; maintaining the collection; clerical duties.
This is a paraprofessional position under the supervision of the Children Services Coordinator. Knowledge of library practices, techniques, and materials is a plus - although not required. Candidates must be comfortable with using computers and devices, willing to do virtual programs, be able to follow written/oral instructions, and work independently.
Qualifications: High School diploma plus two years’ experience as a Library Assistant, or equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, abilities, and skills, and/or ability and willingness to learn them.

Hours: Approximately 19.5 hours weekly; includes some days, some evenings, and alternate Saturdays. Sunday hours available at premium rates.
The Cumberland Public Library is a department of the Town of Cumberland. It is a suburban area of about 34,000 residents, close to the capital of Providence, RI and an hour ride to Boston. The Library is situated in a former Monastery on 500 acres of parkland. The 55,000 square foot Library draws patrons from northern RI and nearby Massachusetts. Besides a Children's, Adult and Teen Centers, the Library also has seven meeting rooms for programs and local community groups. The Library has both traditional and tech savvy patrons and the staff produce innovative programs.
