Job Description

Description:

The Lyons Community Library seeks a dedicated professional to serve as a part-time Youth Services Librarian under the general direction of the Library Director.  This position will develop services, collections, and programs (particularly storytimes) for children and teens.  The role requires a dynamic, progressive, inclusive self-starter to continue building on our youth department’s strong foundation and patronage.  We seek a candidate who is creative, energetic, and genuinely enjoys working with children and their families and caregivers.  As the Lyons Community Library is warm and small, duties will include services to all-ages at all service points. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Functions listed are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.  The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

●       Plan, design, and implement enriching youth-focused programming in a variety of formats inside and outside the Library.

●       Promote and nurture the habit of reading through the selection, cataloging, merchandising, and management of inviting and inclusive children’s and teen collections.

●       Track program attendance, circulation, and other data to guide decision making and to identify service needs.

●       Assist the Director in preparation of budget recommendations for youth service needs and special purchases.

●       Contribute to marketing and communications to patrons.

●       Complete special assignments related to youth services as directed.

●       Perform circulation functions as needed.  Includes creating patron accounts/issuing library cards, checking materials in and out, and processing courier deliveries. 

●       Assist patrons in the use of library computers and aid with use of email, word processing, web-based searching, library-owned databases, and other common software. 

●       Be an information and referral source to patrons by communicating in person, by phone, and via electronic means.  Be a researcher by performing simple to moderately complex research activities.

●       Provide all-ages readers’ advisory. 

●       Frequently use new technology in daily duties and to support patrons with new software, hardware, and on mobile devices.

●       Position must comply with laws governing patron privacy and confidentiality under CRS § 24-90-119, the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association, as well as ADA guidelines governing public access to space and technology.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

●       Strong understanding of children’s and young adult literature and selection tools.

●       Comprehensive knowledge of children’s and teen’s developmental needs and stages.

●       Ability to thrive in a working environment that requires constant public contact with people from all backgrounds and age groups.

●       Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor when working with patrons, coworkers, and community members.

●       Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate, and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.

●       Pay close attention to detail.

●       Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred:

●       Basic Spanish-language proficiency.

Education and Experience:

●       Master’s of Library Science preferred.

●       2 years customer service experience; library experience preferred.

●       An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant job experience may be substituted.

Certificates and Licenses:

None Required.

Preferred:

Possession of Colorado Notary Public certification or willingness to complete such.

●       Work primarily in a library environment and occasionally various community settings.

●       Regularly sit, stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, talk, and hear.

●       Regularly reach, lift, and move arms above shoulder level.

●       Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, or balance.

●       Ability to push loaded book truck.

●       Concentrate on and complete tasks in the presence of distractions.

●       Regularly operate a variety of standard office equipment including a computer, telephone, e-reader, bar code scanner, copier, and fax machine.
