Job Description

The Lower School Librarian works with students, grades 3-5, and teachers in order to develop and promote skills and interest in literacy, research, and media. The Lower School Librarian is responsible for working collaboratively to develop a library program that supports the curriculum; provides instructional leadership for the teaching of information literacy skills; develops and maintains a library collection rich in both print and non-print materials; and manages the Lower School Library as a flexible, multi-task learning environment. 
 

Responsibilities:

• Teach Lower School Library Classes (Grades 3-5)
• Support and nurture the love of reading across genres
• Create a joyful, vibrant and welcoming learning space that celebrates learning, reading, authentic inquiry, and collaboration
• Create an environment in which student engagement and creative problem-solving thrive throughout the library program
• Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to support student learning and curriculum in research projects and reading programs using 21st century skills that incorporate the use of literacy, information literacy and technology
• Partner with LS faculty for special community events such as author visits, Battle of the Books and Rooster Games
• Support and participate in a professional learning community
• Ensure the library collection represents a diverse and multicultural range of authors and topics
• Train, schedule, and supervise library aide
• Oversee the maintenance of the lower school library collection, including circulation, collection development, inventory, and evaluation
• Assume other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Master of Library Science (MLS)
• At least 3 years of teaching experience
• Flexibility and curiosity as well as a love of children, and an extensive knowledge of children’s literature
• Strong knowledge of content area, teaching methods, learning styles and educational research related to lower school learners and readers
• An understanding of the scope and the sequence of library and information literacy curriculum
• Experience in evaluating and selecting print and digital resources
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to proactively collaborate with students, faculty, and parents
• Ability to empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers and skillful researchers.

Technology and Software Knowledge:

G Suite for Education, Chromebook usage,  Follett Destiny Library Manager, LibGuides,
social networking, database and creating digital content.
