Job Description

Position Definition

Responsible for the management, planning, implementing and evaluation of the Youth Services Department; identifies and coordinates programs and events; provides professional advice and guidance to achieve the Library’s goals and objectives.

Essential Functions

Supervises the Youth Services Department {Children’s (ages 0-12) and Young Adult (ages 13-28) areas}.  Organizes the work schedule for the Youth Services staff.  Coordinates and oversees collection development and acquisitions.  Oversees budget for Youth Services Department.  Manages electronic resources (website, social media, operational software, etc…).  Interviews, trains, supervises and evaluates Youth Services staff.

Develops, implements and evaluates programs for youth; provides publicity for programming utilizing media outlets.  Develops and recommends policies and procedures for the Youth Services Department.  Purchases materials for Youth Services. Conducts orientations for families, school groups and children’s organizations.  Acts as primary liaison to local schools and other local youth organizations.

Provides professional reference services to patrons, educators and youth organizations.  Performs Circulation and Reference duties as needed.  Prepares monthly reports to the Library Director and Board of Library Trustees.  Works collaboratively to improve departmental practices and procedures.

Performs other related duties as required.

Supervision

Works under the general direction of the Library Director. Assumes responsibility for Library operations in the absence of the Library Director (in conjunction with the Senior Adult Services Librarian).

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employee is regularly required to walk, stand, sit, speak and hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls. Able to reach with hands and arms as in picking up paper, files and other common office objects. Employee may be required to stoop, bend and lift or move objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges; requires ability to read documents and use a computer.

Work is performed under typical office conditions; noise level is quiet to moderate; work is subject to seasonal fluctuations and administrative deadlines.

Operates computer, microfilm reader, fax machine, copier, scanner and other standard office equipment.  Has contact with Town employees and officials, Boyden Library Board of Trustees, Friends of Boyden Library, vendors and the general public. Has access to patron information.

Education and Experience

MLS or equivalent Library degree from an ALA-accredited institution; five (5) years of experience in Library Youth Services in a Public Library; with two (2) years of which were in a supervisory/managerial experience.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

Knowledge of concepts, principles, professional practices, procedures, techniques and current trends in the field of Library Science. Thorough knowledge of Children and Young Adult literature and materials; understanding of child development. 

Ability to independently and collaboratively develop methods for efficient operation of the Youth Services Department; supervise, train and instruct personnel, including staff and volunteers.  Time management and multitasking skills required; flexibility and attention to detail paramount. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with staff, patrons, vendors, community organizations and other town employees. 

Salary and Additional Information

Salary range for the position is $60,679 - $76,931.  This is a full-time benefit eligible position covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the Town of Foxborough and Boyden Library Employees Association. This is a 35 hour per week position and includes working alternate Saturdays and one Sunday a month from October – April.
