Job Description

Performs professional duties including programming for children and families; answering reference, readers’ advisory and general questions; planning and implementing outreach activities; participating in collection management; and additional functions in specialty area of responsibility.  Requires some evening and weekend hours.  May report to either Librarian II or Division Manager.
The salary range for this position is $19.86- $28.80 per hour with a hiring range of $19.86 - $24.33, depending on qualifications and experience.

  • Develop storytimes, programs, and outreach events
  • Implement, promote and evaluate storytimes, programming and outreach events within the community virtually and in-person
  • Provide customer service, technology assistance and reader’s advisory for children and their families from diverse backgrounds
  • Guide library patrons in the effective use of library services and resources
  • Responsible for collection development
  • Utilize technology and various communications programs daily for programming, marketing, and administrative duties
  • Provide library tours as needed

Specialty Job Functions:

Early Literacy Librarian I – Birth to 5 years

  • Serve as a liaison on different cross community boards, library and city committees
  • Initiate, negotiate and secure collaborative partnerships with local community partners for the purpose of providing literacy and enrichment programs
  • Prepare, organize and deliver literacy and enrichment programs and services with collaborative community partners for children and families
  • Connect patrons to necessary community resources available for and related to children
  • Promotes and manages the Baby Box program for the library
  • Promotes materials from Bright By Three

Elementary Librarian I – Elementary aged children

  • Serve as a liaison on different cross community boards, library and city committees
  • Initiate, negotiate and secure collaborative partnerships with local community partners for the purpose of providing literacy and enrichment programs
  • Prepare, organize and deliver literacy and enrichment programs and services with collaborative community partners for children and families
  • Connect patrons to necessary community resources available for and related to children
  • Plans, promotes, and conducts special programs including Storyteller in the Park
  • Library contact for Battle of the Books

Spanish Services Librarian – Assists Spanish Population

  • Serve as a liaison on different cross community boards, library and city committees
  • Initiate, negotiate and secure collaborative partnerships with local community partners for the purpose of providing literacy and enrichment programs
  • Prepare, organize and deliver literacy and enrichment programs and services with collaborative community partners for children and families
  • Connect patrons to necessary community resources available for and related to children
  • Develop programming for the Loveland Spanish Community
  • Provide translation services for the City and for library customers

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Knowledge of standard library operating procedures, methods and philosophies.  Background and knowledge of literature, media and library services to young people.  Ability to work with and relate to children of all ages, identities and backgrounds and their caregivers.  Strong customer service skills.  Ability and experience in providing story times, programs and public presentations to groups of varying ages.  Knowledge of various reading levels or materials for youth.  Working knowledge of the library’s computer system and the Internet.  Ability to use computer software to prepare materials for marketing and promotion.  Ability to establish effective working relationships with library coworkers.  Ability to perform job duties during relaxed or stressed activity levels within the division.  Ability to work independently, multi-task, meet deadlines and to constructively problem solve.  Spanish language proficiency a plus.

Education and/experience

Bachelor’s degree required.  Masters in Library Science (MLS) from accredited program preferred.  Two (2) years library or directly related professional experience required.  MLS may substitute for experience requirement.  An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may substitute for education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Licensure and/or certifications:

Must possess a valid driver’s license for this position since outreach programming is expected.

Material and equipment directly used:

Operating knowledge of library on-line computer catalog and staff terminals; Internet; PC’s; printers; technology such as tablets; eReaders; sound systems; MP3 players,  laminators; photocopier; paper cutter; DVD players; telephone; library carts; library materials (books, DVDs, CD’s, etc.); and arts and crafts materials. 

Working environment/physical activities: 

Incumbent will work in a dynamic public library environment with extensive public contact; must be able to access and visually scan the library computer and staff screens and explain the displayed information and direct customers to shelf location; must be able to position or move materials on varying height shelves for extended periods of time; must be able to move library carts weighing in excess of 50 pounds across a carpeted floor; must be able to manipulate visual materials during story times.  Flexible schedule requires some evening and weekend (Saturday and Sunday) hours.
