Job Description

Portsmouth Free Public Library is seeking a warm, friendly, energetic librarian who enjoys working with children.  The primary responsibility of this position is the coordination and implementation of library services for children, infant through 5th grade. The Children’s Librarian will supervise the Children’s Room staff and maintain a safe, productive, and attractive environment and will work directly with children and their parents or caregivers. This is a highly visible and responsible position, and, therefore, the person in this position should present a positive image making all people feel welcome and accepted at the Library.  This 35-hour/week full time position includes benefits and some nights and Saturdays.

Educational Requirements:

  • Master of Library Science or Master of Library & Information Science degree from an American Library Association accredited institution is required.
  • Knowledge of children’s books and literature is a must and experience working with children is desired.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the children’s collection through active selection and deselection
  • Plan, prepare, present and/or supervise programs for infants through grade 5
  • Plan, prepare and coordinate the Library’s summer reading program
  • Assist patrons in selecting appropriate reading material for children
  • Assist students and parents in finding information and resources
  • Act as a liaison with area schools and child care centers, both public and private
  • Work with other staff members to create crafts and display items
  • Coordinate with the Young Adult services staff, as needed
  • Attend professional meetings and continuing education opportunities
  • Work at the circulation desk in the children’s room
  • Promote community awareness of library resources, services and programs
  • Miscellaneous other duties as assigned by the Director and/or Assistant Director
