Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Special Collections Manager, is responsible for operations of the photo archives, including processing, arrangement and description of archives collections, creation of finding aids, and electronic imaging of Special Collections materials. Plans and coordinates exhibitions for Special Collections. Provides prompt, courteous, accurate, friendly, professional reference services in the Library’s Special Collections of regional history and genealogy materials (books, maps, newspapers, government documents, photographs, manuscripts and archives). 1. Provides excellent reference services 20+/- hours each week including one evening per week and a weekend rotation. 2. Recommends acquisitions for photo archives collections. 3. Inventories, arranges and describes photo archives collections. 4. Provides online access to digital images. 5. Participates in projects involving photograph collections. 6. Directs, in coordination with the Special Collections Assistant Manager, the work of one part-time staff and volunteers. 7. Coordinates photograph preservation work. 8. Participates in Special Collections planning. 9. Serves on Library teams and committees. 10. Provides an efficient, courteous public image and presents a positive image of PPLD. 11. Performs other duties as assigned.

In-depth knowledge of archival principles and practices with an emphasis on photographic archives. 2. Demonstrated knowledge of preservation methods and theory. 3. Ability to plan, coordinate, design, and mount exhibitions. 4. Knowledge of digital imaging and metadata standards, and management of electronic collections. 5. Skilled in using Adobe PhotoShop and other image editing software, scanners and inkjet printers. 6. Ability to provide genealogy and regional history reference services for patrons from a wide variety of backgrounds and with a wide range of research skills. 7. Knowledge of regional history and/or genealogy research methodologies. 8. Ability to effectively use online resources. 9. Ability to effectively direct volunteers and part-time employees. 10. Ability to contribute to a pleasant and productive work environment. 11. Excellent time management skills and organization. Ability to coordinate complex projects. 12. Ability to think, speak and write clearly and persuasively. Requires experience in processing and providing reference for photograph collections. Strongly desire experience working in a public or academic library providing reference for regional history and genealogy collections. Require ability to work in a team-based environment.
